REMINDER: Westcrest Park Off-Leash Area closed this week

As announced by Seattle Parks, West Seattle’s only dog park is closed this week for work. That work at Westcrest Park Off-Leash Area involves bringing in new wood chips for the “terraced area,” but leaving the small/shy-dog area open this week for all dogs to use.

Reopening is expected by Friday. Meantime, what will be West Seattle’s second off-leash area, south of West Seattle Stadium, is in the planning phase; we’re following up with Parks on the latest construction timeline.

Planning phase is code for not anytime even close to the near future.

I’d forgotten it was closed but reminded by the higher-than-usual rate of off-leash dogs in Lincoln Park this morning at 9 AM, lol.

Completion by fall 2026. Yeah, right. Lincoln Park is the non official off  leash dog park in West Seattle. Better get used to it. Nobody is getting ticketed for letting their dogs roam freely off leash. Parks Dept  and City of Seattle don’t do anything. They just get a warning. Good luck with that. I’m confronted every day by (sometimes  very  large) unsecured dogs. Their owners assure me “They are friendly “, but maybe I don’t want your dog coming up to me un-leashed? Please, put your dog on a leash in city parks.

My medium sized (30#) dog was so terrified by a group of off leash dogs at Lincoln Park that he dropped to the ground and no matter what I did, including treats, he remained frozen and wouldn’t  move. I ended up carrying him all the way back to the car. He’s a rescue and I’ve been working intensely to overcome severe hypervigilance.  A large park with the ability to stay well away from other (leashed) dogs and use management skills to pass by things that frighten him—and “He’s friendly” dogs with no recall instead raced up to us and set our training back for a month. Take your dogs to a Sniffspot if you want them off leash. Also, might I suggest an obedience class if you don’t know how to teach a 100% perfect swift recall regardless of what else is around.

Looking forward to wood chips replacing gravel at WCDP, also looking forward to the dog park at the stadium.

With the preferred plan for the stadium dog park connecting to the long N/S trail to camp long, I hope the city spends some resources on upgrading/maintaining that trail.

That’s okay. All the entitled dog owners will just use Alki Beach as their off-leash area!

Sorry, comment time is over.
