WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Package theft in the rain

The people out working in this blustery weather include thieves. That’s what Andrew‘s porch-camera video shows. He reports, “This happened December 10th @ 11:45 AM in Gatewood, minutes after the package was delivered.” The camera did not catch a getaway vehicle. But if you’re expecting a delivery, you’re best advised to have a plan to claim it quickly.

This happened to us too! Monday night (11/8 @5:45pm), someone came and grabbed 2 boxes UPS left on at door within a couple minutes of delivery, in between ups setting them on the stoop and me finishing cooking to go grab them. South end of highpoint. Our doorbell camera didn’t even go off for the thieves, unfortunately.

Consider having high value items delivered to secure pick-boxes.

The archives will show that those are anything but secure.

More secure than your front porch.

More secure than your front porch.  While probably true, its a sad statement on our society, and justice system that its such casually accepted.

The Amazon Counter inside Whole Foods is more secure. I use that instead of Amazon Lockers.

Yeah, they’re quick & convenient too. Literally anything’s better than your doorstep. If you travel for a living, the porch may just not be a safe option.

Was she actually chatting on her phone while stealing?   That’s a sign this isn’t her first time.   She feels too comfortable.

She’s pretty identifiable. Let’s find her!

There aren’t any options.   You can yell at them to drop the package but: it’s generally not legal to attack someone, even if you catch them stealing your package. In most places, the law prohibits taking matters into your own hands and resorting to violence. Instead, if you catch someone stealing your package, it’s best to contact the authorities immediately and let them handle the situation. Use of force should only be used in self-defense if you or someone else is in immediate danger. It’s important to prioritize safety and let the proper authorities handle the situation according to the law. Those thieve more than likely will never be caught.  Just the way the world is today.

Most secure (and nice folks!) is what I use in Admiral District, Alki Mail & Dispatch. Very small fee to hold your packages but peace of mind worth it for me. And I live Highland Park, don’t mind the drive over

I know not everyone can do this, but I have all my packages delivered to my office.  I also leave notes to Amazon and/or UPS to place the packages in the back of house.  Amazon is good at that, UPS not so much… I hope everyone has a great Christmas Holiday.

Looks like I’m going to have to start having a decoy box of dog poop for them to steal.

I love the paint bomb decoy packages.

Sorry, comment time is over.
