West Seattle’s four new school-zone speed cameras are in place. Only one will be activated soon.

Don sent that photo Monday, after noticing installation of the new school-zone speed cameras on Admiral Way for the return next year of Alki Elementary, once its new building is complete. That led us to check in with SDOT for the status of the new school-zone speed cameras that have been scheduled to start operation this year, on California SW near West Seattle High School (not far from Lafayette Elementary, too). SDOT spokesperson Mariam Ali‘s reply revealed that they’re likely to start with the southbound direction only:

The new southbound school zone speed camera on California Ave SW near West Seattle High School has been installed and is in final testing. We expect it to be activated in the coming weeks, though the exact date is still being finalized. Once activated, the camera will issue warnings only for the first 30 days after activation, with citations beginning after that period. SDOT will share information with the community when the camera goes live. Notices will be mailed to drivers during the warning period.

A northbound camera is also planned for West Seattle High but has been delayed due to underground utility conflicts. Our engineering team is working on a solution, and we’ll share an updated installation timeline once available.

SDOT also verified that the Alki Elementary-related cameras on Admiral Way are in place (as shown above) “but will remain inactive until the new school building opens, currently expected in 2026.” Five other school zones in West Seattle have ticketing cameras, listed here. Getting a ticket from a school-zone cam could cost you more than $200.

High school students with cars often leave WS High like bats out of hell. Talk to your kids BEFORE they receive one of these tickets.

You should have already be talking to them before they kill someone.

The cameras are aimed at the beginning of a school zone. Once you are some distance past a camera I’m sure you’re good to drive like a bat out of hell. No idea what that distance is, but if the kids peeling out of the HS are well away from the camera they won’t be zapped. If anyone is going to figure this out, it will be the kids.

You would think so but that’s not the case. I was driving past Gatewood earlier this year. I was almost in front of the old folks home The lights activated at that point and gave me a ticket for going 25 in a 20. You can literally see that the lights weren’t active in the video and they activated AFTER I entered the zone and was nearly through it. When the judge saw that the ticket was thrown out immediately but I still had to waste a full day going to court

I’m sorry that happened to you. Police (SPD) have to watch the video before signing off and issuing a ticket. Their name, signature, and badge number are on the infraction notice. Never should have happened but I am not surprised.

Thanks for the extra detail about why that was not a valid ticket. I do wanna let you know that you can request contesting these category of tickets via.MAIL … You did not have to go in person.. these type of tickets do not go on your record, but they are expensive.

Tickets for speeding in school zones should always go on a driver’s record. It is a very serious offense, and it needs to be treated as such. To that end, only $200 for a ticket? Okay for a first offense. Beyond that? Should be at least $1,000.

      Vote accordingly

Will the cameras also be ticketing during off-school hours?

  • bill September 30, 2025 (7:20 pm)

I wish the End School Zone signs were as prominent as the cameras. Between monitoring my speedometer and scanning for the end sign (because of the tailgater behind) I feel like my attention to the road is badly degraded. I’d use my cruise control but it won’t engage below 25.

    • My two cents October 1, 2025 (1:33 pm)

Using cruise control in a neighborhood like West Seattle? Wow, that sounds safe – I’m sure nothing bad would happen.  Personally, find it pretty irresponsible.

  • KM September 30, 2025 (7:27 pm)

I would love this at the school by our house. The parents careening through the neighborhood are a danger.

    • IDC9 October 1, 2025 (11:55 am)

These cameras should be installed in every school zone. I’m sorry to hear your neighborhood doesn’t have them. Sounds like it needs them.

  • Rhonda October 1, 2025 (12:00 am)

Punitive speed cameras should be banned in the entire state.

  • Westside October 1, 2025 (2:42 pm)

We can’t manage our money properly, and need to take as much from our citizens as possible. I know…. more speed camera’s.

    • Mellow Kitty October 2, 2025 (10:20 am)

Translation: I just want to drive as fast as I can without consequence.

On Roxbury going west past Holy Family, the signal is bocked tree limbs. You can see it when your 20 to 30 feet and you need to slam on the brakes.

    • WSB October 1, 2025 (8:58 pm)

Yikes! If you haven’t already, can you call that in to SDOT? 206-684-ROAD

  • Heather October 2, 2025 (4:28 pm)

Isn’t it intrappment for police to put hidden cameras up?
