WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Gunfire investigation at 29th/Myrtle

Shortly after multiple 911 calls reporting suspected gunfire in the area, police report finding proof of it at 29th SW and SW Myrtle [map]. They’ve found casings and have Myrtle blocked off as they look for more. No injuries reported so far. Police told dispatch that witnesses reported a 4-door silver Mazda sedan was involved.

I guess we should all ask ourselves how much longer are we going to put up with open gun play on our streets?  Several times a week there are news stories of drive by shooting or just plain assassinations being committed.  Murder or inflicting damage. The police obviously don’t have the number of patrol officers needed to secure our neighborhoods 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.   These hoodlums that are randomly shooting are difficult to identify due to no license plates, stolen vehicles or the ability to get away without pursuit.  There doesn’t seem to be any easy answers, but I suggest we encourage our City Council and Mayor to continue to invest in our police force and take the steps necessary to change the laws AND enforce them that are made to protect its citizens.   Requiring license plates and current tabs could be enforced by the parking patrol so as to not reduce police on the streets.  Make it their priority to ticket cars without current tabs or license plates.  Snapping a picture of the VIN number would identify those with out plates.   Just thinking.

Never ending gunfire….so sad! What is up with these nut jobs with guns? More cameras please so they can be apprehended.

Cameras are useless against stolen cars and cars with no or stolen license plates. What’s needed is more SPD patrols in areas like this with a history of multiple shootings.

Cameras aren’t entirely useless. This is not an argument for or against them but rather a statement of fact given all the charging documents I wind up reading. In some cases, if they have video of the crime (let’s say, a crash-and-grab at a store, with the burglars ramming a stolen vehicle into the storefront) and trace the vehicle to find out whose it is and where/when it was stolen, there may be video of the theft and the thieves, and sometimes that enables further tracking (most common in recent charging documents, the clothing worn by the thieves/robbers/whomever, like a sweatshirt with distinct lettering seen in video/photos from some other case) …

Cameras were how the hit & run driver was caught for running down & killing the elderly man at 15th & Roxbury….and that crime was during the dark hours. WSB had the article & follow up posted – check it out.  Cameras do help solve crimes.
