WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Robbery attempt on Admiral street

Sent by a reader who asked to remain anonymous:

Today at approximately 3:00 pm I was heading south on Walnut near the Hiawatha wading pool. I sensed someone was following me but I didn’t turn around to look. There was no one in the park that I could approach as a safe zone. As I approached Stevens I could still hear the individual behind me.

When I reached Fairmount and Stevens I turned and I saw a man with a knife in his hand asking for my bag. I offered my bag of groceries but he wanted my backpack. I told him no several times and he backed away as a couple was approaching nearby.

Description: White man, late 20s, early 30s, brown hair. I think he had facial hair but not 100% certain.
Wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt with the hood on.

Knife blade was approximately 5″ with a light wood handle. The knife was not your standard kitchen knife but perhaps a hunting-type knife??

He was last seen walking west on Stevens toward WSHS. I spoke with a police officer and a report was filed.

I was out and about right around this time – walking to PCC from the Walnut side – and saw a man matching this description hanging out in the lawn of the high school (on Walnut, at the side entrance to the school). I thought it was odd. He passed me again walking through the high school as I walked back home. Perhaps the school’s security footage caught him, since he was hanging out that area? If there is an SPD report number, I would be happy to call in that “tip” in, if it’s worth anything.

I’m so sorry. Born in west seattle in 1952. So safe back then.

    • SoLongDelridge June 24, 2025 (12:14 am)

Have you reflected on what you have done to help or hurt the situation during that time?

      • Safety June 24, 2025 (5:45 am)

I think that could be reframed and be more constructive. “SPD offers some good personal safety classes. They teach good awareness skills along with responses. Sad to say, we need that even on a sunny mid-afternoon walking on public streets. When I took the class I learned about some really loud small alarms to carry on your key chains, and they can be a very good deterrent. The officer teaching the class even keeps one on her personal keys. And we also practiced very, very loudly and forcefully screaming NO! They teach other good things, too. There were a few men in my class, but I’d recommend every woman and teen girl take it.

Haha, safe can be a funny word; my friend used to come here shopping and stuff during the day with her grandma but they had to head back to the ID by nightfall because it wasn’t safe here if you were of Asian descent.

      • WSDUDEMAN June 24, 2025 (12:42 am)

Having a hard time believing this, but if it helps you cope with modern day potential knife robbery, you do you.

        • CW June 24, 2025 (6:56 am)

WOAH! Never judge before you walked in someone’s shoes and seriously, check your privilege!

        • Jethro Marx June 24, 2025 (7:08 am)

I’m not doing me, I’m doing America. If you find this hard to believe, wait until you find out about our internment camps; there’s some wild stuff in history books!

          • Pete June 24, 2025 (10:08 am)

It is very recent history too.  It’s weird people seem to have totally memory holed all of those assaults on Asian people around covid. Obviously, there was also redlining and restrictive covenants. Alki was one such neighbourhood…https://seattlemag.com/seattles-ugly-past-segregation-our-neighborhoods/Whilst I’m not saying that a broad daylight knife crime is not shocking, it’s also offensive to suggest there is no way a non white person wouldn’t feel safe in the area a few decades back.

      • Sammy June 24, 2025 (8:01 am)

Ok, maybe a little more information, like what year did this occur? And what was the ID for? To buy alcohol or what exactly are you talking about?

        • ltmmgm June 24, 2025 (10:09 am)

@Sammy- ID is the abbreviation for the International District I do believe to which Jethro Marx is referring to and it is now referred as the CID.

@JETHROMARX – My father’s family was interned at Camp Minidoka, ID. family#10925 so I am all so familiar of that part of history

        • Pete June 24, 2025 (10:10 am)

          ID=International District lol

        • Jethro Marx June 24, 2025 (10:26 am)

I’m not exactly breaking news here- it’s only in the last few decades that openly racist personal actions and public policy have fallen out of fashion.

In case you think I’m hoarding all the history knowledge for myself, try looking up redlining, it’s not a secret and it was still happening in the 80s, maybe early 90s.

The anecdote I shared would have been from the mid-70s I’m guessing. ID is international district in Seattle-speak. Shoot, the police pulled over our King County Executive in Mount Baker and said “What are you doing here, people like you don’t live around here.” He’s black, still lives there, and that was in the 2000s.

Anyway, we’re straying from the topic at hand but you all need to get over the dream of the utopian 50s, it was not great for many Americans.

    • Seattlite June 24, 2025 (7:22 am)

Totally agree with you about it being safer back in the day.  Growing up (50’s, 60’s) in West Seattle was wonderful due to its access to water, great views, good schools, quiet-safe neighborhoods.  Back then Seattle had a robust SPD with fully staffed police officers who were able to respond in a timely manner. As a teen, taking the bus downtown to go shopping did not worry my parents because police officers actually walked their downtown beats back then.  Also, criminals were arrested, charged and kept off the streets.  Seattle has gone a bit sideways in these past years in having a continual police officer shortage and a weak judicial system.

Workdowntown, I’m sorry that you’re being attacked for a simple, honest statement.  The responses to your comment are bizarre.  That seems to be how comments/life work these days, which further reinforces your statement; hostility and violence are much more prevalent.  What a horrifying experience for this young woman.

      • WS Res June 24, 2025 (9:06 am)

Literally no one has attacked Workdowntown. One person asked them a question and others have shared different views.

      • Workdowntown June 24, 2025 (6:44 pm)

Thx for your support anonyme. I lived in the Admiral area for most of my life,  loved it. But moved east about 10 years ago. Much quieter.

        • JM June 24, 2025 (7:53 pm)

My favorite poster. The “I don’t live there any more but I’m going to write my negative irrelevant comment anyway”. Perhaps focus on your own neighborhood in the “East”.

  • Coincidence? June 23, 2025 (8:45 pm)

Sorry this happened, very scary and glad no one was hurt. Had me thinking that in reviewing footage of the overnight Admiral robbery at Arthur’s, seems like a blue hood on as well. Could be coincidence but close in the type of crime. timing, general location, and apparel? 🤔

  • Rhonda June 23, 2025 (10:29 pm)

I left PCC an hour ago and I saw a man fitting that description sitting on the ground in front of the California/upper entrance.

    • alkiannie June 24, 2025 (11:09 am)

      Did you call the police?

      • Rhonda June 24, 2025 (1:11 pm)

No. I don’t call 911 on random young men sitting peacefully in public. This was over an hour before I read about the robbery attempt. Afterwards, I called the store Manager to inform them to call 911 if he was still in their area.

  • Martha June 24, 2025 (12:14 am)

Did I pass you with my dogs (pug and chihuahua) by Hiawatha? I saw a woman walking alone,  followed by a young man who seemed a little off. Wondered if I should have followed up. Asked you to stop and chat or something.  Ugh!! Was that you??

    • Susan June 24, 2025 (11:08 am)

Yes that was me.  Appreciate your concern.

      • Martha June 24, 2025 (12:47 pm)

So sorry I didn’t follow my instincts. Glad you’re safe. Please say hello if we run into each other again.

  • Kenny June 25, 2025 (4:14 pm)

I just saw someone matching the description entering the park, walking a tad erratically with what looked like a bottle of alcohol in their left hand. Reported it to the police. Stay safe out there, folks.

Sorry, comment time is over.
