FOLLOWUP: No grocery strike – contract ratified

Earlier this month, we noted a strike-authorization vote by local grocery workers and thousands of colleagues around the region. Strike authorization doesn’t mean a strike is guaranteed, and in this case, it’s not going to happen, the workers’ union UFCW 3000 has announced. UFCW 3000 says the Kroger (including QFC and Fred Meyer) and Albertsons (including Safeway) workers ratified a contract in three days of voting this week, and that the new contract includes “highest-ever average annual wage increase, $2.70 over two years.” Contract details are here.

Curious what actual workers think of the deal they worked out. Overheard and employee talking about it and that particular worker wasn’t happy. Suggested they gave up a lot in the deal.

I heard the same from a Safeway employee tonight. People, if you wish to really make a difference, refuse to use self checkout. These are job stealers. Just say no!

There are always upset members after contract talks Be it over a pet issue or they really do not want to work union. I was on every contract team at UW from the very firs (2005-2007 budget cycle) through my retirement in 2021.  Never made everyone over the moon happy.  I also spent two stints in UFCW the first back in 2008 2018 moonlighting at Fred Meyer in garden center , second 2021 2024 doing Toys and sporting goods. There are some big wins for many people and lcoal 3000 as whole.  The contracts are now synced so that Grocery and General merch at Fred Meyer end  at the same time.  Gen Merch workers move over to the grocery pay scales and make more money.  First increase in employer payment into the medical plan in over a decade, increased pension funding to reach full funding by 2030.  Some grocery workers are angry that those items meant less money on their check and screw every one else

I’m glad you didn’t strike. But what is the additional benefits to the workers in this contract?

No more complaints, please, about the high cost of groceries.

The high cost of groceries has literally nothing to do with union wages and a living wage for employees, but do go off.

What a wonderful system. You can’t complain about prices. You can’t complain about wages.
