ADMIRAL WAY BRIDGE: Another change this weekend, plus, progress report

The change in open lanes on the Admiral Way Bridge as of Monday – currently one lane each way on the north side – isn’t the only change planned this week. According to SDOT, “This setup will remain in place through Saturday, June 8. Starting Sunday, June 9, crews will shift the right lane closure to the westbound side of the North Bridge. Throughout construction, at least one lane in each direction on Admiral Way SW will remain open.” When we asked about the lane-closure changes, we also asked if there’s an update on when the entire project will be done. Short answer: No. SDOT spokesperson Mariam Ali‘s longer answer: “We’re still on track to wrap up work this summer. We’ll update the public if that timeline shifts.” The work has been under way for almost a year; the original completion estimate was spring, but SDOT told us in February that “full painting” of the bridge (which is really two bridges) had extended the timeline.

Annoying that they won’t give a more precise estimate. Summer is essentially here, so that estimate means completion some time between tomorrow and September.

this whole thing has been so annoying! Will it ever end?!?!?!?

I too find it difficult to believe that they’re unable to give any kind of substantive information on the project. Is someone from SDOT actually coming out from behind their desk to check on this project? I have to wonder……

Let’s get the crosswalk back at 39 Ave SW/SW Admiral!  With the sidewalk closed on the south side of the bridge, it’s a test of courage crossing Admiral.

Per the sign posted on Fairmont 06.28.2025 that was already changed at least twice!

    • WestSeattleCoug June 3, 2025 (5:58 pm)

Actually, that sign was originally 5/28 but someone used electrical tape to change the 5 to a 6! Bwahahaha!!

What’s really funny is that the sign is actually 5/28, and someone used electrical tape to change the 5 to a 6! Bwahahaha!!

I’m grateful SDOT is spending taxpayer dollars to strengthen, maintain and repair bridge infrastructure, no matter how long this takes.  We all saw what happened when this kind of work was deferred, delayed and left undone five years ago.  The West Seattle Bridge became so dangerous, it was closed with just a few hours’ notice and stayed closed for two and a half years!  It was even deemed potentially unsafe at first to divert under it to get to West Marginal!  So I won’t be complaining about this project because it sure as he** beats the alternative.

There is no way it’s healthy for the public to be walking through this job site. Every person working there has ear plugs in, and we are having to cover our ears as we plays in addition to breathing in god-knows-what mystery dust and paint fragments. It’s such a mess. I wish they’d left that crosswalk in place so there was a safer option to not pass through the job site. When we called in to make it permanent this fall they referred us to the crosswalk at Olga/Admiral – so obviously not a reference from someone who’s visited the area in person. Not to mention how their trailers and trucks are parked making turning onto admiral incredibly dangerous. For people who don’t live within a block like us – they are working all day saturdays too. It’s so noisy we have to keep our windows closed all the time. Totally sucks and I’m totally over it. Having the deadlines be delayed and cryptic is not helping morale. I will say that the people working there are courteous and friendly, so we appreciate that!

Really a shame that you have to be so inconvenienced -repairing & strengthening a bridge that thousands use daily ?? -such a bother!

Yes this project is probably taking longer than was first advertised but no I don’t want them to take shortcuts to hurry it along.  It’s a remodeling project of sorts and I’m sure they have run into unexpected challenges along the way.  If you are the type of person who wants the technicians to hurry up and finish the brake job on your car as fast as they can or if you want Boeing to build their planes as fast as they can then I guess I understand why you are complaining about this project.  I prefer these jobs are done right the first time and that can take longer.

I don’t understand why they can’t change the timing of the traffic lights on the 41st and 42nd arterials. It was already ridiculous that they got equal green light time as admiral, and now with the construction they create a huge backup. It goes down admiral all the way to 49th at heavy traffic times!

One thing these lane closures have revealed is that the rush hour backups are not much different with one lane opposed to two lanes. Perhaps one of the lanes should be dedicated transit with frequent service so people would not have to wait in traffic so much.
