READER REPORT: Lasers pointing at ferries again

Report from a reader on the water: Somebody in Fauntleroy with a green laser is pointing it at ferries again. Striking navigable vessels with a laser is a felony crime, not to mention a health and safety hazard. If you see anyone doing it, call 911.

There is a small group at Lincoln Park right now at the first waterfront event shelter. One guy was spinning firey torches on a chain and they have some sort of speaker system playing music.

I take it you suspect them. Did you call 911?

I told WSP officers at the ferry terminal.

Did you call the police ?

And do you have a reason to suspect them beyond the fact they were having fun and playing music? Did you see anyone with a laser?Im old too, but I dont judge others without due cause. Lifes too short for that.

Sounds like a fun party, and nothing you’ve said here is suspicious.

Glad someone else here doesn’t think every group of people enjoying each other’s company at a public gathering spot is automatically a troublemaker or a criminal.

No one accused them of criminal activities. Perhaps they saw who did it or where the beam shone from?

When will we as a society realize that this type of stuff happens only because there are little to no consequences to anti-social and criminal behavior? Oh, noes, someone is pointing high power lasers at aircraft and other vehicles again, after decades of this happening. Whatever shall we do? The technology for automatic detection and precision firing back of blinding laser weapons is available and cheap. Use it, then publish the results and repeat as required until this is eradicated.

On Friday evening (maybe between 6-7?) we saw two older, white, well-to-do gentlemen on the beach with a high powered green laser. They were shining it all over the place, both inland toward homes and businesses and out over the water. Didn’t think to call 911, but will in the future.

That’s interesting, JAM. I wonder, with no snark intended whatsoever, why would people do that? Is there a past time that involves going to places like Lincoln Park and pointing laser beams at things, intentionally or inadvertently? Is it possible the culprits could be careless rather than malicious? I fully understand why pointing lasers at ferries, planes, etc. is illegal. I’m just trying to understand how/why it happens.

Sorry, comment time is over.
