UPDATE: Crash closes eastbound West Seattle Bridge after 99 exit for 3+ hours

5:23 AM: Thanks for the tips. The eastbound high bridge is closed right now because of a crash investigation. Police radio suggests this could last at least until after 6:30 am. (added) Archived SFD/SPD radio indicates this happened around 3:30 am near the 1st Avenue South exit and was described as a single-vehicle crash, a Tesla Model 3 from which one person needed to be extricated.

5:47 AM: A commenter and one of the few operating SDOT cameras in the area indicate that the closure is at the 99 overpass; you can get onto the bridge but you’ll be diverted onto NB 99.

6:10 AM: Added screengrab from SDOT camera looking west toward the crash scene and the 99 overpass and exit. The wrecked car, which is white, is partly visible.

6:53 AM: Officers just told dispatch that the bridge should reopen soon after SDOT finishes cleaning up the scene.

7:01 AM: All but one lane of the EB bridge has now fully reopened, We’ll update this story with whatever followup information we get later about injury/circumstances.

8:45 AM: Here’s the summary from SPD:

On Friday July 19, 2024, at 0326 hours a white Tesla was travelling at a high rate-of-speed eastbound on the West Seattle bridge. The vehicle failed to maintain its lane of travel and careened between the north and south cement barriers before coming to rest, quite a distance later. The 33-year-old male driver showed obvious signs of impairment and was placed under arrest. The 25-year-old female passenger suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. She was transported to Harborview Medical Center via Medic One. It was expected the adult male driver would be booked into King County Jail for Investigation of Vehicular Assault, pending medical evaluation by hospital staff.

You can take 99 NB. That is where everyone is being diverted

    • WSB July 19, 2024 (5:56 am)

      Thank you.

  • Molly July 19, 2024 (6:16 am)

The white Tesla had its whole top ripped off and front entirely caved in.. Never seen anything like it. Car is still there at 6:15 and everyone is being diverted onto 99 N.

    • WSB July 19, 2024 (6:40 am)

The top was ‘ripped off’ because SFD had to cut it off to extricate the trapped person. Following up with SFD and SPD regarding extent of injuries and other questions.

      • Daniel July 19, 2024 (7:19 am)

Also to follow up: “front entirely caved in” is a sort of intentional design choice of modern cars that don’t have engines in the front.  It creates a large crumple zone that absorbs more of the impact.  It is surreal the first time you see it, because we’re so used to the front of the car having an engine.

    • KD July 19, 2024 (12:14 pm)

I heard the radio chatter call on this early this morning of SFD saying they were going to need to ‘take the top off’ a common job with the jaws of life tool for better access to the injured. I remember most folks were stunned by the ending result images of the crash in the tunnel in Paris of Princess Diana’s car. People thought it was all crash damage, but the top had also been taken off for better access in rescue.

  • OneTimeCharley July 19, 2024 (6:16 am)

For the first time ever, I will be voting “no” on the upcoming transportation levy, until they learn how to keep the cameras on. Yes, probably wire thieves, but transportation levy revenue is not endless. They absolutely cannot can’t keep the cameras on in this critical corridor, however they want untold millions to remove one of the lanes down Highland Park Way? Yet another “feel good” project when they cannot even keep useful the essentials within our integrated system. Learn how to appropriately spend what you currently have before asking me for more. For now, it’s no thanks.

    • Jon Wright July 19, 2024 (7:15 am)

That will show them…way to stick it to The Man!

      • Anne July 19, 2024 (7:38 am)

If enough feel the same -it just might. But  most Seattleites have rarely met a levy they didn’t blindly vote yes on so I’m not holding my breath.

      • Pelicans July 19, 2024 (7:57 am)

Actually JW,  OTCharlie has a point.

      • OneTimeCharley July 19, 2024 (9:54 am)

Did I say I was “sticking it to the man” in some juvenile epithet? No…you said that. I was explaining why I intend to vote no on the transit levy (first time in 27 years) and how this morning’s accident highlights the critical but non-functioning cameras. I was also hoping others may also join me in helping enforce accountability within our department of transportation for the revenue they are afforded. Grow up JW.

        • SoLongDelridge July 19, 2024 (11:07 am)

Grow up, says the person voting no because of cameras.

        • Steve July 19, 2024 (5:07 pm)

Defunding doesn’t change behavior. You get trickle down failing systems and end up worse off. Taxes be like that.

    • Seana Barker July 19, 2024 (8:02 am)

I agree with you on NOT liking the removal of one of the lanes down Highland Park Way! This is ridiculousness – add more housing and people and remove capacity on major arterials doesn’t make sense!

      • Jort July 19, 2024 (12:19 pm)

Oh no, the arterials will still have PLENTY of capacity for buses, bikes, etc. There’s more than enough street space in Seattle to move the entire population several times over. Just not, you know, when each and every person feels like they have to drive a car to do every single thing outside their home.

    • Bbron July 19, 2024 (8:32 am)

this is my favorite because you come to a thread where a private vehicle has independently shut down a major commercial route for hours, and then you’re upset that the traffic cameras aren’t working and will vote against a transport levy that is 1) a majority goes to road maintenance that primarily benefits cars and 2) has some provisions to increase public transit which gives folks alternative to driving and crashing their cars. definitely cutting off the nose to spite the face.

    • bill July 19, 2024 (9:14 am)

Riiiight.. with even less money SDOT will be sure to concentrate on the vital task of maintaining your favorite camera.

      • WSB July 19, 2024 (10:52 am)

SDOT says the bridge camera connectivity was cut by the East Marginal Way fire. However, there are others long down (like 15th/Roxbury, which they attribute to ongoing construction – I am fairly sure that’s over now but have to go through later and look).

    • Derek July 19, 2024 (10:27 am)

Are you seriously whataboutisming a safe corridor plan for bikers because you’re mad about cameras?

    • K July 19, 2024 (7:17 pm)

Does this mean OneTimeCharley supports defunding the police because of all the unsolved crimes?  If not, that’s a little hypocritical.

  • Rosemary July 19, 2024 (7:36 am)

I wonder if this crash was connected to the global tech outage.

  • Pedant July 19, 2024 (9:45 am)

The barriers are concrete, not cement.

    • LT July 19, 2024 (11:25 am)

👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I intentionally changed the word to “concrete” when I read through the article. 😂

      • WSB July 19, 2024 (11:32 am)

Sorry, but the blockquoted part (either blue or italicized, depending on whether you’re viewing desktop/laptop or mobile) is a quote from SPD, not my choice of words. Sometimes when I have an abundance of time I parenthetically fix quotes (most common SPD error is that they tend to write “suspects” when they mean “robbers” or “burglars” or whatever, and please don’t make me stop down to explain the difference) – TR

        • Pedant July 19, 2024 (11:53 am)

Oh, no, I know it’s a quote, I just wish more people used those terms correctly.

          • WSB July 19, 2024 (1:10 pm)

            “Migraine” …

          • CarDriver July 19, 2024 (2:15 pm)

            Touché

          • Conan July 19, 2024 (4:07 pm)

            Haha, nice!

          • g July 19, 2024 (5:34 pm)

            Game, set and match!

  • No dui? July 19, 2024 (11:34 am)

Obvious signs of impairment but they won’t be bringing a dui charge, only vehicular assault?

  • EmpatheticCarOwner July 19, 2024 (1:11 pm)

I wonder if anyone cares in the least for the person extricated out of the car or is the usual WS anti-car vitriol just going to continue to spew? The driver is likely  quite shaken and being ruled out for injuries, so I hope they recover quickly and have no lifelong physical ailments as a result.  I, too, will be proudly voting “no” on any transportation levy on any ballot I encounter and will proudly continue to drive my personal vehicle. #freedoms.

    • Lauren July 19, 2024 (1:33 pm)

I feel very bad for the passenger whose life has been forever changed.I feel nothing but disdain for the drunk driver who could have killed her and himself.

    • Lagartija Nick July 19, 2024 (2:28 pm)

Wow, this comment has it all. Some passive aggressive shaming, insulting other commenters, simping for a drunk driver (seriously?!?!), and some peak performative virtue signalling. Bravo!

    • immanuelkant July 19, 2024 (2:59 pm)

Did you read this part “The 33-year-old male driver showed obvious signs of impairment and was placed under arrest”?Where does freedom start and where does it end? If I want to stay alive while an impaired person is about to hurt others (purposefully or not), do I need to yield in the name of freedom?

    • bill July 19, 2024 (3:55 pm)

You won’t be driving your personal car much of anywhere if road maintenance continues to be underfunded.

    • Bbron July 19, 2024 (11:49 pm)

if you check the order of when comments were made, the conversation shifted away from the collision and into politics when someone made a point to broadcast anti-transportation funding sentiment. no one with an “anti-car” position detracted from “showing empathy”.

  • Al King July 19, 2024 (2:43 pm)

WSB. With your fountain of knowledge, have you ever heard of an establishment-or individual being charged with over serving someone who’s then gotten into a vehicle and left?

    • WSB July 19, 2024 (3:17 pm)

I don’t routinely monitor LCB actions. We’ve had a few establishments temporarily shuttered by state enforcers over the years for alleged violations.

    • K July 19, 2024 (7:16 pm)

If Roxy’s didn’t get in trouble over the DUI homicide that killed two teenagers, I would say that it’s probably a very rare thing.

  • Admiral-2009 July 19, 2024 (3:19 pm)

Pendent – thank you, it’s my pet peeve also.  Cement is a binding agent that combined with sand, aggregate and water forms the concrete barrier.

  • aa July 19, 2024 (4:20 pm)

A completely ridiculous statement made by Anne based on nothing other than a desire to let others know that she knows better than “most Seattleites”.

    • Seattlite July 19, 2024 (5:35 pm)

AA…I agree with Anne.  Common sense seems to get lost along the way when voting levies that don’t make monetary sense.

Sorry, comment time is over.
