WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Wind alert; tree down

11:19 AM: Though the wind has been kicking up for a while, we haven’t had an official alert from the National Weather Service until now: The NWS has our area under a Wind Advisory alert until 11 am Tuesday. The alert says we can expect “south winds 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph.” Keep everything charged!

2:30 PM: Thanks to Eve for the report that a tree has fallen on Delridge near Webster – we don’t have cleanup-status information so be wary of possible traffic effects in the area.

As an electrician, I’m here to dispell the myth that when the power goes out it’s a result of a “transformer explosion”

This is not true, whenever you hear what many people describe as such, is in fact (a majority of the time) the fuse “tripping” as a result of a voltage overload on that “hot to neighborhood” line and NOT the actual transformer exploding.

Modern electrical grids have systems in place to prevent such an issue from regularly occuring. Plus the resultant fire from the mineral oil inside these can be hellish (to say the least)

So the next time you hear a loud “pop/explosion” or see a blue flash in the sky before you lose power, that’s what it is…a fuse “tripping/failing” not a transformer explosion. Hope this helps

Oh! As a child in rural North Dakota, bad weather is so exciting! My dad worked for the power company. The lights went out and we felt excited. Not my dad, he counted out loud to ten. No lights, he put on his boots and went to work.

Thanks! Publishing another weather update shortly with an Alki tree fall, so we’ll use this too. Be sure to report to SDOT (they of course are accountable for sidewalks too) – afterhours number 206-386-1218

Sorry, comment time is over.
