UPDATE: Pedestrian hit, injured by man riding stolen motorcycle on Alki Point ‘Healthy Street’

9:34 PM: According to exchanges between dispatch and responders, a pedestrian was hit and injured by a motorcycle rider on the Alki Point “Healthy Street.” Police were still sorting it out, but the most recent exchanges indicated the injured person was in a crosswalk close to Alki Point. They are reported to have suffered a head injury and briefly lost consciousness, and were to be taken to a hospital.

9:49 PM: The motorcycle is stolen, according to further exchanges between officers and dispatch. A commenter says they witnessed the crash and that the motorcycle rider left the scene with other riding friends – that matches with an early radio exchange about a second motorcycle leaving the area after the collision.

(Reader photo, uploaded to comment below)

12:10 AM: Two more commenters below have reports from the scene, including one with the photo we have republished above, showing the motorcycle left behind. Meantime, SPD just provided us with this short early summary:

Shortly after 9:00 p.m., 911 received reports of a man being struck by a motorcycle at Beach Dr SW and SW Benton Pl SW. Police arrived and located a male in his 60’s suffering from a head injury. Seattle Fire Department provided aid and the man refused transport to the hospital. He was later transported to the hospital by family.

Witnesses said the victim was in an altercation with a suspect that was driving a motorcycle. The suspect drove a short distance away, turned around and drove at speeds and struck the man, who was standing in the street. The suspect left the motorcycle on the ground and fled with another motorcyclist on a red/black motorcycle.

The motorcycle that was left by the suspect was verified stolen. The suspect is described as a WM [white male], 5’10”, heavy build, wearing a helmet.

The incident number, if you have information, is 24-173756.

I was walking my dog when it happened. The guy riding the motorcycle was going extremely fast and hit the man taking pictures of the sunset. The motorcycle rider then ditched his bike and ran back to his other rider friends and dipped out. Numerous witnesses and he left his bike. That’s a felony and he needs to go jail. Something has to change now.

The motorcycle is reported to be stolen, so that could explain leaving it behind.

      • bolo June 26, 2024 (12:35 am)

Or left the bike because it was damaged.

  • 1994 June 25, 2024 (10:03 pm)

I am sorry to hear about this hit and run of a pedestrian and hope they make a speedy recovery.  I also hope they catch the driver!  A Healthy Street does not make it a Safe Street.

Oh shoot, I hope the guy will be ok.. thinking of him and hope he will be ok.

SDOT “Alki-Duh”  street engineering.Motorcycles, including motorized bikes and City of Seattle personnel, are using the walk/roll/wheel protected lane. The City of Seattle trash trucks roll over the tire stops to go into the ped/bike lane.  Yeah, how’s that working out for ya, SDOT?  Thanks for nothing.

  • M June 25, 2024 (10:58 pm)

I was against this Healthy street by lighthouse. In the responses, it shows motorcyclists driving in the pedestrians/bike lane. This is a stupid concept. Pedestrians don’t know if they should walk on sidewalk or in the healthy street lane. Cyclists don’t know if they should ride in that lane or ride with the car lane. One would think cyclists should in the “safe” lane and yet the bike sharrows are in the car lane.  For cyclists who use the safe lane, pedestrians walking in the lane are oblivious to cyclists and are scattered walking across the lane. I personally feel less safe in that section now, as both a cyclist and pedestrian, as it puts more pedestrians and cyclists of crashing into each other and now motorcyclists are using that lane.  I hope the person hit quickly recovers and the person who hit him is found and brought to justice.

Did you miss the part where it says the bike was stolen? And the rider dumped the bike and fled with their friends?

      • Maybe you’re used to a different kind of criminal who allegedly commits a crime but will follow road signs.

        Uh, ok.

    • Beach Drive Hit and Run June 26, 2024 (1:42 am)

First of all – thanks to SPD, the bystanders and Seattle Fire Department for the quick response and aid.   They  all did an exceptional job and we really appreciate them.   I am the wife of the guy who was hit  in the pedestrian walking lane on Beach Drive by a motorcyclist.  He was thrown by the impact and received a nasty concussion.  This is not about the Stay Healthy Street, SDOT or signage.  It was an illegal violent act.  Based on reports of witnesses, the Police said the motorcycle was racing in the pedestrian lane at high speeds which is illegal and dangerous.    He must have done this to prove some stupid point- like he could drive wherever he wanted at high speeds with impunity and didn’t need to follow the laws.  The motorcyclist did a loop back on the car/ motorized lane and then re-entered the pedestrian lane where my husband was walking.  My husband told him it was a pedestrian lane and his motorcycle shouldn’t be in it.  The motorcyclist then  ran his motorcycle directly at my husband and hit him in the pedestrian lane.  The motorcyclist ran from the scene and the bike was stolen.   For all of you people who write comments in the blog that you are not going to follow the traffic rules on Alki just because you don’t like them,  I hope you don’t resort to violence because you disagree about parking spaces or think the law doesn’t  apply to you or that you  should be able to race at high speed  in a pedestrian lane just because you want to.     Real people get hurt.  This was a criminal hit and run by a blatantly speeding lawless individual on a stolen bike on a Tuesday night in the summer on Alki.

I’m so upset reading this. I hope your husband heals quickly. It’s pretty unbelievable that someone would do this; it angers me and family so.

      • jissy June 26, 2024 (12:47 pm)

I’m so sorry for your husband and I wish him a speedy and complete recovery.  I would also recommend contacting Mr. Richard Adler, an attorney who specializes in cases involving TBI (traumatic brain injury) as well as Pedestrian accidents.  He’s written a book about it after his extensive work on Zackery Lystedt’s case and changed laws in WA State surrounding student athletes and TBI/Concussion.    Sometimes these injuries have layers to them and this *person* needs to be brought to justice.    Adler Giersch, Personal Injury Law, Compassionate counsel, tough advocacy – Adler Giersch    (I have not worked with Mr. Adler personally but have heard him speak a handful of times and have 2 of his books after following Zackery’s case).

      • Teri June 26, 2024 (12:57 pm)

Send positive thoughts to your husband❤️Thank you for your accurate assessment this violent crime.  Like others, I hope they catch the person who attacked your husband.and the person who helped him get away.

    • Person June 26, 2024 (2:21 am)

I agree. I’ve cycled down this street a few times now and it feels very cramped and unsafe for cyclists. The protected lane seems like it should be for bikes, but they are supposed to share the narrow driving lane with cars? Coming from both directions?

  • Come forward now June 25, 2024 (11:25 pm)

The bike community is connected. Whoever knows the person that ran over the pedestrian needs to come forward. Just like the hit and run in White Center, you’ll be caught eventually so come forward and face the consequences of your deliberate choice to either ride a stolen vehicle and harm someone and flee, or know who it is and aid them in their crimes.

  • Vanilla_Skyline June 25, 2024 (11:35 pm)

Witnessing this was beyond infuriating. Unfortunately, it wasn’t an accident at all. Suspect and his associate were both riding motorcycles; I first saw them heading south on Beach Drive. Both were engaging in some stereotypically stupid cyclist behavior (revving engines, speeding, and in the case of suspect, riding inside of the new barrier in the pedestrian only zone). They continued until they were out of view. A short time later, the suspect rode back north alone and pulled up alongside the victim, who was walking inside of the pedestrian only zone. Words were exchanged, and though I was too far away to make out specifics, I could tell that it was heated. I am guessing that that it had something to do with the suspect’s earlier antics. The suspect disengaged, and continued riding north. I figure that whatever happened was over, but as I watch he then slows down, walks his bike between a gap in the new barrier (back into the pedestrian only zone), and faces the victim from a distance – staring him down. He revs his engine repeatedly, drops the clutch, and accelerates directly toward the victim, obviously playing “chicken”. Victim is thrown, suspect dumps the bike and it slides, coming to rest on its left side. I am on the phone with 911. Other witnesses spring into action and attend to the victim. Still on the phone with dispatch, I follow the suspect, who, after trying and failing to get on his bike again, is hobbling away from the scene in obvious pain. Before I can get closer to the suspect, his associate appears and he hops on the back of his bike and they zip away, cutting through traffic. I provide what description I can, but couldn’t get the plate in time. SPD and SFD arrive. Poor guy did lose consciousness and had no memory of the confrontation and impact (I had to tell him what had happened). However, he seemed stable, and his wife (who had been called) took him to the hospital per SFD’s recommendation. SPD confirmed that the motorcycle was stolen, and I turned over the suspect’s badly damaged phone that another witness found at the scene.

    • Lincoln Park Mom June 26, 2024 (8:20 am)

Thank you for being a good citizen and taking notes on this situation.  I’m happy to hear there was a phone that was found.  Maybe this will lead police to him.  Unfortunately it may not lead to an arrest.  On an another note, these riders are tearing up Fauntleroy in front of Lincoln Park all hours of the night.  It’s gotten ridiculous.  I’m starting to detest summers.

    • Pete June 26, 2024 (8:39 am)

I’m glad you were there to help. Hopefully the busted phone has some salvageable info on it to nail the jerk.

    • Pelicans June 26, 2024 (12:49 pm)

Vanilla Skyline and Others who helped,  Thank you so much for being good citizens, neighbors and caregivers. I believe if any one of us was hurt, you are the angels who would come to help us. We live in a beautiful place with many wonderful, caring people.Aside from this whole street design being a poorly executed mess, it invites scofflaws.  I’ve seen many instances of motorized vehicles using the pedestrian/rolling lane-with walkers in it!  Please send your input to SDOT.  This first year of the “Stay Healthy” street is an evaluation period, and supposedly the city will consider our input for keeping it/redesign, etc.  To the man who was injured, I’m sorry you had to go through this. Thank you for standing up to a bully.  Hope you heal quickly and well!  💪🫶

  • AlkiPointer June 25, 2024 (11:58 pm)

I arrived at the scene after the police did and listened to two separate witnesses describe the incident. A motorcyclist racing down the street in both directions had words with a pedestrian and then came into the pedestrian lane facing the pedestrian. The motorcyclist revved his engine and charged the pedestrian striking him head on at approximately 25 miles an hour.  The pedestrian was knocked unconscious and the perpetrator fled initially on foot and then on the back of another motorcycle.  This was vehicular assault if not attempted manslaughter.   Anyone bringing  their feelings about the healthy street into this conversation is disrespecting the victim and excusing a criminal and a coward.   Don’t blame the healthy street. Don’t blame SDOT.  Don’t blame the design of the street. If you do be ashamed and blame yourself for projecting your opinions onto this situation. There is one person at fault here.  And it is 100% his fault.

Please report this to the police, the incident number is above.

  • Craig June 26, 2024 (1:20 am)

Last week I was riding my bicycle away from the lighthouse at 7:30pm when two green and black motorcycles (dirt bikes, Kawsaki likely) appeared near the east entrance to the new protected walking path on Beach at this location, both riders without helmets. One of the bikes road a long wheelie in the street toward the lighthouse, the other in parallel entered the protected bike lane and played chicken with me on my bike, but passed me without incident. I’m so glad I didn’t end up like this sad story.

  • Reed June 26, 2024 (7:18 am)

Criminal/stolen bike aside, this is just another example of aggro behavior from someone operating a motor vehicle, which builds more evidence on why more extreme measures are needed to reduce/restrict motor vehicle access. If it wasn’t this guy, it would be some pissed off ninny who eventually lost their cool.

  • Oakley34 June 26, 2024 (7:19 am)

These dirt bikers are out of control. They treat the parks as their playground. Last week midday one guy (kid) repeatedly went thru reservoir park at hurtle and 35th. Not just to cut through, but repeatedly zipping down south to north and turning around speeding thru the back street and going again thru the park north to south. There is almost zero traffic enforcement in WS and this type of dangerous driving is a direct result.

    • Pinto June 26, 2024 (8:22 am)

Totally agree. Yesterday I saw someone on an electric dirtbike on the trails at Schmitz Park trying to go up the very rough trail that goes right next to the creek.

  • Joan June 26, 2024 (8:09 am)

Perhaps all the bikers were riding stolen bikes! Do not expect anyone else who knows these guys to turn in the attempted murderer. This is  not acceptable and it’s just the start of summer. It’s already out of control. We need the National  Guard to patrol the entire Alki area. Sorry folks, but if this is what it takes, I’m all for it. Take back our beach area. The criminals have claimed it. They have gotten too bold and we need bold action. There aren’t enough cops to keep there.

    • National Guard?!?!? June 26, 2024 (2:00 pm)

If the national guard were deployed Alki would be one of the last areas they are needed. Downtown, SODO, Georgetown, Rainier Valley, the Central District. Aurura Avenue north, the CID, and the U-Distrct have enormous levels of crime that need to be addressed first.

    • Heep June 26, 2024 (5:32 pm)

I was unaware that the National Guard are trained in law enforcement. This incident sucks, but your eagerness to live in a militarized police state is disturbing.

  • Runner June 26, 2024 (8:23 am)

I live on Alki Ave and it’s sad to say that it’s a little like the Wild West. Most of the car and motorcycle drivers are great but there seems to be a group of motorcycles and cars that couldn’t care less about any rules of the road and the pedestrians walking near them. If the Police could enforce the laws these folks would probably stop coming to Alki, but maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

  • flimflam June 26, 2024 (9:37 am)

What a terrible and frankly, ridiculous, story. I can’t imagine the mindset that tells you it’d be a good idea to to that. Hope the victim recovers and is able to get some sort of justice.

  • T Rex June 26, 2024 (10:02 am)

What a sad excuse for a human and his buddies who helped him, your day is coming too.  I cannot put in writing on the blog what I want really would like to say, but I think we are all in agreement of what that is.

  • Joe Z June 26, 2024 (10:13 am)

Does traffic violence necessitate “bold action” or does that only apply to other types of violence? Also, SDOT needs to quit it with the 6 inch tall barriers that do nothing to protect pedestrians from vehicles.

  • Attempted Murder? June 26, 2024 (10:53 am)

It seems like the motorcyclist tried to kill this poor man. I hope he and his accomplice are caught ASAP.

  • DailyWalker June 26, 2024 (11:17 am)

This is terrible…I’m so sorry it happened and hope the victim has a speedy recovery.I walk along the area daily, although during the summer months I change my route to further south by Me Kwa Mooks park so I can avoid all of the shenanigans like aggressive motorcycles, unleashed dogs, and groups of car paraders that park and hang out.  I think it’s natural to connect this incident to the recent change by SDOT.  I think they really missed the mark if the goal was to reduce dangerous driving and increase pedestrian safety.  I would like to actually see the street blocked and closed entirely around the lighthouse to prevent the cruising behavior.  Residents could still get to their homes from one side or the other but the desire for people to parade and speed through that area would be dramatically cut down.  I constantly see people ignoring the signs for “Closed Street”.  If there is a thruway, people will take it.  A Dead End would be a heck of a lot less attractive. I also would like a lot more signage that is impossible to ignore.  And even a camera that promises a fine for violators.  I saw 3 dirtbikes  parked down on the concrete platform by Me Kwa Mooks (where the ladies do their boot camp class)!  I mean it’s obvious to me that isn’t a place for motorcycles but I didn’t see any signage at all for those that don’t have common sense.

    • Kyle June 26, 2024 (12:32 pm)

I don’t think doubling down on reducing more access to everyone (law abiding citizens too) who don’t live on Alki is the answer. It alienates law abiding people who did nothing wrong and isn’t very effective for stopping these types of incidents. Energy should be spent instead on increasing enforcement and accountability (convictions) of the laws we pass in the city.

      • DailyWalker June 26, 2024 (1:09 pm)

I totally agree about enforcement and accountability.  I just don’t see how creating a dead end would restrict access to anybody.  Everything would be completely accessible from either direction to exactly the same people that currently have access. Guess what – we don’t have to spend energy on one thing or another.  We can spend our energy on brainstorming all solutions.  I had an idea and shared it in this forum.  That’s OK.

    • k June 26, 2024 (12:32 pm)

Don’t be ridiculous.  Connecting this incident to the changes made by SDOT is like connecting Tommy Joe Garrett’s death to the new signals at 15th & Roxbury.  A man was targeted and attacked after a confrontation.  That circumstance can exist on any street configuration.  This was a deliberate attack.

      • DailyWalker June 26, 2024 (12:59 pm)

It’s not ridiculous to have an opinion that may be different than yours.  I believe that the recent changes did nothing to discourage the type of cruising that goes on right there, which leads to conflicts between law abiding citizens and others that flaunt laws.  I’m entitled to express my opinion in this forum and calling me ridiculous is well … ridiculous!

      • Pelicans June 26, 2024 (1:11 pm)

There was not one incident/confrontation like this, that I have seen, prior to the new configuration. I’ve had a front row seat to this for more than 25 years.

        • k June 26, 2024 (3:49 pm)

Uh-huh, uh-huh… cool, cool…  Now tell me how many roads in Seattle have been reconfigured all together in that 25 years?  And how many times did someone choose to assault another person on that road right after it was reconfigured?  Road design doesn’t make people rev their engines and try to mow down innocent pedestrians.  Please stop making this about you and your pet peeves.  This is a story about assault, full stop.  Assaults happen (unfortunately) everywhere.

          • Pelicans June 28, 2024 (9:35 am)

k-  So,  you dismiss out of hand things residents have seen and experienced,  relegating our concerns to “pet peeves?”  Get off your high horse.  There are motorized vehicles using the “walking, biking , rolling” lane every day. The terrible incident with the injured man and the criminal jerk on the stolen bike hopefully is an outlier. But people using that lane, feeling safe should be on their guard.  You can reply as nastily as you want, but facts are facts. Motorized vehicles are using that lane. SDOT f’ed up on this whole project.  And it totally prevents a large part of the population who don’t live in Alki from enjoying the parks that their taxes pay for!

          • Pelicans June 28, 2024 (10:21 am)

k –Where in my comments did you get “pet peeve ” from?  You don’t know me. Motorized vehicles use the “walking, rolling” lane almost every day. Hopefully it’s unusual that a criminal on a stolen motorcycle would commit this kind of crime aginst an innocent pedestrian.  But nonetheless, the flawed SDOT design is a recipe for problems because it gives people walking in that lane a false sense of safety. The lane also denies convenient use of the Constellation Park waterfront to everyone who “isn’t from Alki.”  It’s discriminatory, non-equitable, and benefits only those who live there,  or are healthy enough to be able to walk,or bike there. How’s that for a “pet peeve”  k? Full Stop.

  • Admiral-2009 June 26, 2024 (7:26 pm)

This is so frustrating to hear about, I hope the victim recovers quickly.

What I do not understand is why the City did not designate the new space as a bike/rolling path, there is already a sidewalk for pedestrians?

  • Ted June 27, 2024 (4:33 am)

This healthy street initiative was a public right of way take over by a group of wealthy home owners and idiotic SDOT.I feel for the man that got hurt but I fear it will not be the last person due to this stupid concept that is near impossible to police. The only way to change this will be to sue this stupid idea out of existence. That starts with SDOT. Any one that witnessed it can also claim emotional harm. Shame on the homeowners that pushed for this under Healthy Streets cover story. You own what happens. Period.

  • Cindy June 27, 2024 (5:26 pm)

My husband and I saw the guy riding really fast, popping a wheelie on that road.  As we rounded the bend the bike was on the gound, tires still spinning.  A girl came running up from behind us and seemed upset.  We thought maybe she was a girlfriend or something. As we got closer,  we saw the person on the road was not the bike rider, but somebody else.  The guy who had been on the bike was walking towards me so I asked if he was okay.  He looked stunned, had nasty crap dripping from his nose.  He mumbled, “Yeah”, and kept walking.  Another guy on a bike, a girl, and also the girl who ran up behind us earlier were standing by an Uber that had pulled up behind us.  The girl who seemed connected to the guy who hit the pedestrian was yelling at the guy to get on his buddy’s bike and for the other girl to get into the Uber with her.  About that time a witness told us the guy didn’t have an accident.  A local had walked into the street to tell this guy to slow down etc.  The kid rode by him, turned around, and hit the gas– mowed the guy down.  So it was a hit and run. I tried to get a picture of the license plate of the bike he fled the scene on, but it was too blurry.  Now I wish I’d jumped out into the little street while they were still just beginning to speed up, maybe make them go slow for a few extra seconds so that somebody would have been able to get a clear photo.  Honestly, if all it takes is for a local to tell you to slow down on their street to make you lose your bloody mind and deliberately try and run him over, you’ve got one hell of a an anger issue.  I guarantee this won’t be the last time that guy pulls this kind of crap if that’s the case.  I hope they catch him, as well as the 2 women who drove off and the guy who helped him escape the scene.  All three of the others associated with the guy are complicit in assisting a criminal and ought to be treated accordingly when caught.Hopefully the man who was hit is in the clear and didn’t suffer a serious head injury.  Lucky for him he had a neuro surgeon on scene helping him long before the ambulance arrived.  He’s lucky.

    • 1994 June 27, 2024 (10:25 pm)

These kind of people (motor bike idiot) may end up having short lifespans with these anger issues and risky behaviors….

    • AF June 28, 2024 (11:47 am)

Cindy- you cracked the case! I hope you told the police about the uber so they can contact the women who knew this guy. Uber should have credit card info of whoever called the uber.

Sorry, comment time is over.
