SEEN FROM WEST SEATTLE: Air Force cargo jet’s flyby

Thanks to the texter who just sent that photo (and to everybody else messaging us about the sighting). The jet is a U.S. Air Force Boeing C-17 Globemaster III cargo jet, dozens of which are based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Pierce County.

ADDED: Another view, emailed by Jan Pendergrass:

PLUS: West Seattle skywatcher Kevin Freitas caught the flyby on one of his cameras:

Wonderful photo; doesn’t even look real! Dog and I were walking by north Don Armeni and were startled (okay just me) by this Very Large Plane headed straight for us.  I fumbled for my phone as it turned above us and headed around Duwamish Head and all I got was a photo of its tail end. At least I could show my husband this so he’d believe how big it was!

I was down there too.  Glad the blog got the “goods”.  it was flying so low!

      • Donna September 29, 2023 (6:56 pm)

What about the fighter jets flying LOW right over Gatewood?!

  • Balderdash September 29, 2023 (3:47 pm)

For reference.  c17 fuselage going into a c5

They looked photoshopped, even though they’re real, due to the outrageous size of those beasts. The C-17 is an over-powered hot rod plane that’s as maneuverable as a small bomber. What a show! 🇺🇸

    Thats a big alligator!

Didn’t one fly by the same area about 6 months ago? Just wondering if I am crazy or it really happened.

  • Are those two related? September 29, 2023 (7:01 pm)

Are the two fighter jets that just flew low over Delridge related to this flyover? I have a Truly Terrible Video of two seconds of the tails leaving the screen.

Something huge, low, and loud just flew over our house jusr now, around 6:55pm.  Puget Ridge near 18th/Dawson

Apparently for the Mariners game. We were covering the football game at NCSWAC and heard but could not see the plane(s). I’m still triplechecking.

Wonder what that flyby cost us taxpayers. No money to feed kids in poverty, improve public education, fund healthcare, fix roads, house the homeless, but we get cool flybys!

Freedom ain’t free. The world’s a dangerous place full of thugs. I’m so grateful to live here.

Thanks you for this comment. My wife and I are playing “WSB fly-over bingo” and I don’t have this one yet.

Pilots gotta fly regardless, ask congress to stop sending billions of your tax dollars in foreign aid to other countries.

  • Steph September 30, 2023 (7:55 am)

Right on JG!How can we stop this incredible waste?

    • Rhonda September 30, 2023 (4:52 pm)

It’s not “waste” as military pilots need to fly a minimum number of hours per year. A REAL waste would be planes sitting on the tarmac with inexperienced pilots getting paid their usual salaries.

The vast majority of the time, flybys are just done with mandated training hours anyways. They’d be flown regardless, just somewhere else.  So the extra cost is generally $0.  Of course we can have a discussion about how much the incremental cost is of maintaining a massive air force, and how much that costs the taxpayers.  In aggregate, that’s about $200 Billion.

You can’t even attend a baseball game without the obnoxious intrusion of the military industrial complex reminding everyone of who really runs the country.

Sorry, comment time is over.
