UPDATE: Why Chief Sealth/Denny sheltered in place

12:29 PM: Thanks for the tips. We asked SPD why the Chief Sealth/Denny campus was sheltering in place. Det. Judinna Gulpan replied, “Police responded for an assault investigation in the 2700 block of SW Trenton ST. It appears the potential suspects fled onto the school grounds. Officers located the suspects and are with staff investigating the incident. No further information to share at this time.” We’ll add anything more we find out.

1:16 PM: Seattle Public Schools spokesperson Tim Robinson says the shelter-in-place lasted about 45 minutes and was lifted at 12:35 pm.

1:21 PM: Though police did not provide details of the assault, as commenters note, there was a report of someone getting their “finger cut off” at Westwood Village. Archived dispatch audio says the victim was reported to be a 15-year-old boy.

The large encampment at 25th and Trenton was dismantled earlier today.

And what, what r u implying?

Large? There were exactly 2 people who were swept from that location…and they’d been living there for several months. Wondering why you think it’s related to a school lockdown?

Those people at that encampment kept their area clean and werent bothering anyone. I live right there. Weve had massive problems with people camping there and trashing the place, break ins drugs and so forth, but those latest campers were not a problem at all. They actually spent a lot of effort to make a decent spot, I viewed it often when I walked by.I dont know what “B” is insinuating, but the people there didnt do anything.

Thank goodness!  With so many games happening there, just not safe for many reasons.

Meet the new boss.  Different from the old boss.

My son says a kid got his finger cut off at McDonald’s and the person who did the cutting of the finger fled to Sealth. Hmm.

  • flimflam April 26, 2023 (2:28 pm)

Well that’s disturbing. Hopefully more information will be available later.

I have to say I try to avoid Westwood Village around lunch time, the school kids are rude, loud, disrespectful.  I don’t like speaking out against kids, but they have gotten much worse the last few years.  I complained to the school, but I don’t think they did anything about it.

  • What is going on? April 26, 2023 (3:19 pm)

15 yr old finger!!! Yikes. Is it me or has Westwood Village become super dodgy in the past few years?

If the suspect is a CSIHS student, what will happen to them?

  • Denny Parent April 26, 2023 (5:27 pm)

I wonder why a shelter-in-place was instituted for Sealth and not Denny. Parents heard about it from teachers, but radio silence from administrators.

I have a student at both schools and received an email from both later Wednesday afternoon. Maybe check your junk mail or make sure you’re subscribed. Also I was at a meeting where admin explained the process to send this type of update email. It has to be cleared by a district office. So by the time they deal with the kids, which is most important, it still takes some time to organize communication.

What “principal” Ray Morales sent out on smore ”Dear Chief Sealth Students and Families,We want to inform you about an incident that led to a Shelter-in-Place procedure this morning. We were contacted by Seattle Public Schools Safety & Security regarding an incident that took place at Westwood Village during lunch involving Sealth students. As lunch ended, students returned to campus, those involved were agitated and unwilling to settle down.Out of an abundance of caution, the campus went into a Shelter-in-Place at 11:50 a.m. In consultation with the Seattle Police Department and SPS Safety & Security, we lifted the order at 12:40 p.m. As a result, we decided to reschedule our spring assembly to a later time. A Shelter-In-Place is the process of keeping students and staff safe from incidents outside the building. Exterior doors are locked, and students remain in classrooms and go about normal activities. Students at Chief Sealth responded appropriately to the Shelter-in-Place and respectfully followed the safety protocols.Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership. Sincerely, Principal Ray Morales, Chief Sealth International”

The frustrating thing for me was that I heard it from my students first when she got home from school. Someone at school even offered to show her the picture. The message from the principal came in this afternoon at 5:29 many many hours passed the incident, of course my preference would be to hear the information before my student gets home so I can be prepared to have the conversation right away not in oh by the way somebody got their finger cut off.

I agree! I didn’t know about the SIP until much later and I read the email from Mr. Morales.

      • Tim D April 27, 2023 (11:20 am)

Ditto / our 13y/o goes to summit and told us about the fight and (alleged) photo as well. Our 16 y/o boy goes to Sealth and told us as well, though he didn’t know those involved.

A CSIHS student was in the hallway at school, holding a knife and threatening another student.

  • What are you April 26, 2023 (7:35 pm)

I’m scared for my current 8th grader to go there. It feels like they’re always sheltering in place.

  • chief sealth student April 26, 2023 (8:41 pm)

I am a sealth student and was in my algebra class during fourth period (11:43 am) when 4-5 boys wearing ski masks busted into the class, to begin yelling, threatening and interrogating a student repeating that they needed to know where that student’s friend was, presumably because the alleged friend was the perpetrator of the knife and thumb incident. Once it began to get physical, a group of vice principles and security guards came in running. They got hold of the students (i’m assuming students) and pulled them out of the classroom. I believe they were planning to fight or pursue more intense violent acts to the said friend of the student. The fact that Ray Morales didn’t even mention what went on INSIDE the school today is appalling to me. The danger was not an external danger, it was an internal danger within my classroom and possibly to the targeted persons attending CSHIS.

So, the kids have cell phones = Instantaneous, unfiltered rumor spreading within minutes. Its amazing really. A kid might puke in a class at 8:35 and before anyone even gets to the next period, everyone in the school has already heard about it usually in some embellished form. Thankfully the admin team at Sealth (and Denny) have a list of priorities in this situation that does not begin with writing an email or posting the incident to Twitter:#1 = Student safety. This is immensely complex. Simply figuring out what happened and who was involved takes hours alone. Determining if its actually an isolated incident or an ongoing situation is almost impossible. #2 Rearranging the rest of the day – determining any logistics associated with things like all-school spirit assemblies.#3 In an incident like this, communicating with law enforcement while also maintaining a safe, calm school environment for the >1000 kids and staff who were not involved in the incident. … many more things before a meeting can be held to gather confirmed information and write an email. This in the heals of so much violence in the community already.

    this is traumatizing!

  • K April 27, 2023 (3:36 pm)

This is so disturbing. I hope the assaulted student is mentally and physically recovering okay. I’d love a followup on this post if more info is available.

    • WSB April 27, 2023 (7:07 pm)

Best hope I have of finding out more is if there was an arrest and charges. I checked on that with the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office this afternoon and they hadn’t received anything on the case.

Sorry, comment time is over.
