SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: U.S. Navy submarine, inbound

Thanks for the tips! That submarine just passed West Seattle southbound, and according to MarineTraffic.com is now rounding the south end of Bainbridge Island, on its way toward Naval Base Kitsap. Submarines don’t often show up on the public tracking service but this time, this one is identified as “U.S. submarine.”

Sub seems to be stalled off Manchester

It’s been floating in one spot between Blake and Bainbridge for close to an hour.  Looks like two tugboats are holding it there.

When we posted, it was southwest-bound at 3 knots per MT, so that’s since then. Also no longer showing on MT (but the escort vessels are, as usual).

It’s not a Seawolf sub. The pictured boat seems to have the dive planes in the sail. Looks to long to be a 688.

    Any orca sightings this weekend?

    • WSB February 27, 2022 (9:00 pm)

Not that we’ve heard. The Orca Network mentions a sighting yesterday up in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

Loose lips sink ships. Don’t be spreading into about the movements of our submarines, China and Russia don’t need the help

Why would they not be using the canal? Maybe drydock appointment at Brem? Or a rare visit to USW? Normally, the Boomers go to Bangor.

Eric. Reality check. Russia and China have had spy satellites for a long time just like we do. Any naval vessel travelling on the surface is probably being tracked. They definitely do NOT need to read the WSB for information. And don’t worry, we’re watching Russia, China, & others too.

Not to mention that they had their identifying beacon (sorry, I don’t know the technical term) on – otherwise MarineTraffic.com wouldn’t have been able to display “US Submarine.” (Sometimes it’s simply “warship.”)

Sorry, comment time is over.
