WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Graffiti vandalism

I saw these 2 clowns painting graffiti on the wall this evening at 11:10 pm. It is on 42nd Ave SW on the wall of the Jefferson square parking lot. I called them out and one ran, the other took off toward the QFC on skateboard. There has been a lot of graffiti in the area lately.

Call 911 if you see this or any other crime in progress.

I see a lot of it down all along Alki.  A little effort to catch and punish these hoods will help, but it seems to be a very low priority for the city. I think our new mayor said he was going to work on this.

A lot of the graffiti on Alki looks cool and is artistic.

I’m sure the last mayor said the same thing.

Please help me understand what you mean by “hoods.” What does this mean, to you?

      • ltfd January 11, 2022 (12:46 pm)

Oh oh, Jort is touchy. “Hoods” = Hoodlums, or are you wanting it to mean something else?

You can use a find it fix it app to report graffiti that’s fine and it will create a ticket for the city to come and address it. If it’s on city property like signs etc but on private property it’s the responsibility of the owner of the property. Regardless it’s a good idea to report graffiti (not art graffiti just regular graffiti )

It took months to force the landlord to cover the large graffiti mess on his building at California and Edmunds and then it was just a patch in the wrong color. He doesn’t care about his tenants or his neighbors. Too bad since he owns half the Junction.

It is misdemeanor malicious mischief, up to $1000 and 90 days in jail, but penalties that high are rare. Also, the police have to witness the infraction being committed then chase down and apprehend the perpetrator. It is my understanding that Seattle and King County jails will not currently book such low level crimes,  because covid. This is all before the prosecutor decides whether to prosecute. I try to cover any graffiti in my neighborhood that I can safely get to. I keep a selection of spray paints in my car for that purpose. Taggers don’t like tagging areas which get covered up right away.If you have graffiti on your property,  you can be fined $100/day up to $5000 until you remove or cover it.

So frustrating. Thanks for taking a picture. I hope there’s a chance their family or someone with a sane head will confront and correct them in the way only family will. I live near Emma Schmitz park and emailed the city asking to let them grow the ivy over the lower sidewalk wall to keep taggers from their ongoing ‘art’ posting there. Easy and cheap solution for at least one space.

I hope Bruce Harrell aggressively goes after stopping and cleaning up all the graffiti.  Seattle has turned into looking like a third world pig sty with all the trash and graffiti everywhere.

Thank you, Shawn, for your vigilence.

It’s about  time  we are elect people who will be a little tougher on all this”art”destroying the look and feel of our city.  Hopefully the new mayor and City Attorney will help.

I saw 2 more clowns in Schmitz Park yesterday. They had their radio on with the Seahawks game on. They looked about 35 years old to me.

I would like to point out that this is vandalism, NOT graffiti!   Graffiti is street art and to call this vandalism graffiti is disrespectful to graffiti artist around the world.

Well, when one of these guys ends up doing “graffiti” all over your house or car I’m sure you won’t be complaining about it then. Sounds like you will happily marvel at the work of art and compliment the “artists”… Check out the definition of Graffiti while you’re at it.

Oh give me a break! If graffiti is Art , do it on your own property then. And put it in an Art show. We live in a community, not a cave. Have respect for others. Although i agree , pretty ugly graffiti

Sorry, comment time is over.
