West Seattle weekend scene: Your view into Station 32, at its first open house

ORIGINAL ‘HAPPENING NOW’ REPORT, 11:30 AM: As promised, the Seattle Fire Department is welcoming visitors at Station 32 right now for the first time since the August move-in.

Until 1 pm, it’s the first open house for the newly rebuilt and expanded station in The Triangle at 3715 SW Alaska. More to come!

ADDED 2:11 PM: Since we already took you on a tour of the $18 million station, our added photos focus on who we saw there. Many potential future firefighters:

Eight more photos ahead:

Visitors had many options, not just gawking at the shiny new station. Family fire-safety advice was offered:

Craft tables, too:

Special displays to look at:

Classic fire trucks were outside courtesy of the Last Resort Fire Department, which brought photos to show inside the station, too. And along with the smiles on visitors’ faces, SFD leaders were beaming, too, like Station 32 Capt. Charles Sasse:

We’re told he had a lot to do with putting together the big event. Fire Chief Harold Scoggins was there, too:

Did we mention the mini-fire hats were free?

So was the stroller parking:

Speaking of parking … the station is usually home to Ladder 11, Engine 32, Medic 32, and Battalion 7 vehicles/apparatus, but for these two hours, they were outside and visitors had room to roam:

Missed today’s open house? SFD usually also has some station open houses on Neighbor Day in late winter, so we’ll know in a few months if Station 32 will be open again for that.

Neither this article nor the previous WSB photo tour, linked here, bothers to mention the artwork on the exterior of the building or the artist, Sean Orlando, who created it. The omission of this information is common, in my experience, and I am alway dismayed by it. The fire truck racing down the face of the station is a wonderful and visually significant feature, and deserves to be noticed and credited in print.

Sorry, comment time is over.
