West Seattle whale watching: Orcas on the way

10:52 AM: Donna Sandstrom of The Whale Trail sends word of orcas in the area – southbound. More to come – we’re headed for the shore to see if anyone’s caught view of them here.

11:17 AM: Just found Donna on the west end of the Alki Beach Park promenade. She says they’re not in view yet.

    Did they ever show up?

We haven’t had any further direct reports but digging into the Orca Network FB page, they seem to have a couple reports from “off Alki” in the past half-hour. Pretty murky out there right now (we can’t even see the water in our peek view) but OTOH those fins should show up in pretty sharp contrast! I might have to go drive downhill again …

They took their time crossing the Sound! We finally saw them rounding Alki around 1:30. They were mid-channel, near the buoy, still heading slowly south. Very hard to see as they were disappearing into the mist.  A small group as had been reported earlier – at least one male, a female and some calves. Thanks as always WSB for helping get the word out. Here’s to better visibility when they turn back north!

Sorry, comment time is over.
