ORIGINAL REPORT, 9:54 PM: SFD is sending a full ‘fire in building’ response to the 4800 block of Delridge Way. More to come.

10:12 PM: Info via scanner was impossible to get, so we’re finally at the scene to see what’s going on. Delridge is blocked off at Hudson.

10:22 PM: The fire was at a house across from Pearls coffee/tea shop. It was caused by a propane BBQ, SFD tells us, NOT fireworks related.

A woman and child got out safely. No injuries.

11:03 PM: Back at HQ and adding photos. The fire damage was largely confined to the front of the house. We won’t be able to go back and check on the road but should be open again, since SFD has closed this call completely, meaning no engines left on scene.

That would explain why it’s been nonstop sirens for the past ten minutes. Yikes.

  • DC July 4, 2016 (10:01 pm)

Looks like every engine in Seattle is parked on Delridge at teh moment.

  • Kayo July 4, 2016 (10:03 pm)

I live a block away  and have video right after the fire started.  My kids are freaking out and terrified.  It’s like a war zone right now.  No respect for neighbor’s, fire department or police who are responding.  Still fireworks going off everywhere.   At least we know fire department is close.  We have a hose ready.

  • Sevenless July 4, 2016 (10:09 pm)

Looks like several units have already been diamissed, although at least a few of them raced back north on Delridge to another fire that was just reported in Ballard. Gonna be a long night…

    • WSB July 4, 2016 (10:17 pm)

We saw Engines 37 and 11 heading away as we made our way north. Nothing on scanner, all bollixed up with fireworks mayhem.

30th and Trenton. So so many illegal fireworks have been going on for hours.  This dangerous.   How many fires or property damage has to happen before c the cops drive around and shut it down.   29th between Trenton and Henderson.  30th between Henderson and thistle more and more in this area.  For hours this has been going on non stop.  Rediculous.  So annoyed.

  • AJP July 4, 2016 (10:17 pm)

No respect. Incredibly selfish. I want to spray everyone with a fire hose right now.

    • MsD July 4, 2016 (10:27 pm)

I’m thinking more in terms of sending out crews like in the move The Purge.  Neighbors are in second hour of their fireworks show called ” A Tribute To Entitled A-Holery”.

    • Sam-c July 4, 2016 (11:59 pm)

Please bring you hose and purge crew to 17th.  There’s some a holes still going strong. So loud, our dog is freaking out, and they light up my kid’s room every time they go off.  I don’t know how he’s asleep thru it, but his whole body jerks everytime they go off.

  • DM July 4, 2016 (10:18 pm)

I’m so sick of the fireworks, especially when clueless jerks are blowing them above residential streets/homes/trees.

  • Scott July 4, 2016 (10:20 pm)

    The police don’t care.

  • Elle Nell July 4, 2016 (10:22 pm)

Welcome to Seattle !! And please clean up after yourselves…

  • MsD July 4, 2016 (10:23 pm)

So, so ridiculous every year.  Why isn’t it required to present ID showing that you live in an area where fireworks are legal to be able to purchase them?  Also, how come you can’t take video/pictures with the address visible and then have neighbors fined after the fact?  Would keep the cops/fire department from having to be spread thin on July 4 and could raise revenue for the city.  I’ve had several neighbors for years who have full-fledged professional level shows from their driveways, hell, some actually do them in the middle of the road!  Police won’t come so what’s the deterrent from setting the neighborhood on fire?

  • AJP July 4, 2016 (10:36 pm)

I think the police are overwhelmed, not that they “don’t care”. They just don’t have the resources. Also, big huge booming fireworks are not legal in White Center, either, just the little ones.

    • AMD July 4, 2016 (11:05 pm)

They’re also only allowed for a few specific hours, and only on the 4th.

And I want to second the man power thing.  As irritating as it is that they aren’t patrolling to stop the neighborhood pyromaniacs, I’m glad they’re doing DUI emphasis instead.  I don’t think it’s realistic to have enough cops to handle regular issues, plus DUI emphasis, plus fireworks patrol even at full staffing.

      • WSB July 4, 2016 (11:10 pm)

Again, to stress, this fire was NOT fireworks-related. But certainly there were fireworks in the area – while typing updates in the car around the corner from Patrick walking to the scene (behind the road-closure line) to find out more, I heard them. And back here on the Gateleroy line, I’m hearing them from all directions. Anyway, as for the police, there were several officers holding the traffic line, then a call came in about somebody possibly with a gun in the Alki area, and a couple took off. Alki already had an area blocked off for police by the bathhouse today – we went through in the late-mid-afternoon and saw a couple of vehicles and several officers on foot – and of course there’s a huge contingent that’s been downtown for the Lake Union fireworks crowd and the ramps that are closed off during the show …

Like Elle Nell said, Welcome to Seattle !!!! It’s called tradition here in the United States.

    • MsD July 4, 2016 (11:16 pm)

Well where I come from in the U.S.  illegal meth is a tradition, so does that make it OK to do on July 4?  Is it OK to throw used syringes in my neighbors’ yards like their illegal fireworks debris fall into mine?   Or maybe the lab blowing up and setting their yard and roof on fire is OK?  I absolutely want to be respectful of tradition.

  • TheSeaRose July 4, 2016 (10:59 pm)

So sorry to hear about the fire but happy to know the woman and child made it out safely. Thank you for the updates WSB.

  • Wb July 4, 2016 (11:08 pm)

Yes, the yahoo testosterone is flowing!

  • Show Me the Boom July 4, 2016 (11:17 pm)

I think it’s time that West Seattle puts on its own 4th of July fireworks show. A barge off Lincoln Park or Alki is totally doable.

  • Neighbor July 4, 2016 (11:25 pm)

I wasn’t able to ask the woman if there was anything she needs in the short term, but if anyone hears of anything or a collection on her behalf, I would like to know. Thanks!

  • Elle Nell July 5, 2016 (12:07 am)

I’m glad everyone is ok. Thank you for sharing the private fireworks article- some of the most entertaining comments I’ve read in awhile … Still chuckling

  • Aunt July 5, 2016 (9:13 pm)

This was my nephew’s girlfriend and baby. It was a BBQ accident. No fireworks. Thank god she got out with the baby.

Sorry, comment time is over.
