Update: Crash at 35th/Brandon, 1 taken to hospital

8:36 PM: Police and fire are on the scene of a crash at 35th and Brandon. Someone texted us to report that “a car hit another that drove off the street and through a fence.” 35th is blocked at Dawson on the north and we’re not sure yet where on the south; buses will be allowed through, according to the scanner. More to come.

8:55 PM UPDATE: Traffic is getting through both ways, alternating one direction at a time, slowly.

9:09 PM UPDATE: Police at the scene tell us both vehicles were headed southbound; one clipped the other, which went into a yard on the east side of the street. One person was taken to the hospital.

10:14 PM UPDATE: In comments, Erin reports the scene is clear.

South bound traffic is being diverted at Dawson at Camp Long.

Thanks. They have since shortened the zone and traffic is getting through one direction at a time.

35th still closed at Dawson and Brandon. They are diverting to 36th.

My husband is down there, and an officer confirmed that a car was waiting to turn left on Brandon, and another car behind it didn’t see him and smashed into the back of him sending him across the street through a fence, through another fence and into a driveway.

Southbound traffic looks back to normal on 35th at Dawson; it was being diverted to 36th until approx. 9:30 PM.

What a crazy night! I was heading home on 1st Ave towards the bridge. The car in front of me was erradict and I couldn’t tell what was going on, but as we came up the ramp it side swiped the divider as we merged onto the bridge. Once they hit the bridge the car took off like a bat out of Hades. They were driving up the bridge so fast I have no idea where they went and prayed they got home before hitting someone. Coming on to 35th immediately after I couldn’t help but wonder if it was the car I saw previously, but I doubt it. Please careful everyone!

Thank you, Erin. I had to run an out-of-area errand but just got back and was about to drive over to check. Will add your update instead. – TR

    .
This seems like the exact situation that adding a dedicated turn lane to 35th is meant to circumvent.

Does anyone care about 35th being dangerous? Or what? Kudos to Brian for gently reminding us that 35th needs to be changed.

Sorry, comment time is over.
