High Point community concerns: ‘It’s an ‘everybody’ issue’

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

More than 100 people packed a room at Neighborhood House’s High Point Center for a meeting about community “safety issues” – heavy on concerns but light on specifics.

Opening last night’s meeting, Heather Hutchinson from High Point community management described the reason behind it as a “diverse set of issues” – from car egging to “definitely more big parties happening in Commons Park” with disturbing debris afterward to “larger groups of teens wandering and really sort of engaging in … (behavior including) knock-down-drag-out fights” to “drugs, people seeing drug sales, people thinking they’re seeing drug sales,” to “some real sense that maybe there’s gang colors being worn …”

But before opening the floor to comments and questions, she asked attendees not to get specific about units or addresses.

“It’s not a homeowner or a renter issue,” stressed Seattle Housing Authority community builder Shukri Olow from SHA. “it’s an ‘everybody’ issue.”

Update: South Seattle CC memo on arrest of man with maps, devices; charges say he was looking for friend

(UPDATED 4:32 PM with charges, and charging documents’ mention of suspect seeking a possible SSCC student)

11:25 AM: The South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor) community has received a memo from president Gary Oertli saying the man arrested in North Seattle last week with incendiary devices and maps to local colleges including SSCC has no known ties to the school, and that there is NO “active threat” to the campus. Here’s the memo sent by Oertli on Monday, forwarded to WSB today by a reader:

As some of you might have heard, there is a developing news story that broke late last week with a connection to our campus. Authorities have confirmed that there is not an active threat to our campus.

At this early stage, the connection to our campus is unclear, but here is what we do know:

Ø Police arrested Justin (Miles Jasper) on July 3, and found maps to several colleges, including South Seattle Community College. Our records confirm that he is not nor has he been a student at South.

Ø Jasper appeared in court on July 5 for a probable cause hearing. During the hearing, his bail was set at two million dollars and he remains in custody.

The Seattle Police Department and the F.B.I. have been in contact with campus security. As this story continues to develop, we will continue to keep you posted.

In the meantime, this is an excellent reminder to re-visit our Emergency Action plan on our website … It is also important to update your contact information, if you have not signed up already, on Campus Alerts for immediate updates on campus emergencies or unplanned closures. The link is provided here.

Campus safety is paramount to our community. At this time, there is no action required and our campus will continue to operate normally. We are working hard to continue to keep our campus a safe place for our students, faculty, and staff.

We contacted college communications director Kevin Maloney for comment today and he says that coincidentally, SSCC has a delegation at emergency training offsite today – planned long before this happened: “Myself and 12 others from South, including President Oertli, are attending a three-day class taught by FEMA to continue our emergency planning education. While we have planned on attending this course for months, the incident of last week stresses the importance of this course and previous training.”

Meantime, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office says there’ll be a decision by this afternoon on whether to file charges against Jasper, who is jailed in lieu of $2 million bail. We’ll update this story when that announcement is made, and will watch developments to see if there is any additional information of West Seattle relevance.

4:36 PM UPDATE: Jasper is now charged with four felonies – two counts of possessing a stolen firearm, one count of possessing a stolen vehicle, one of possessing an incendiary device. The charging documents provided by the KCPAO do briefly mention that when police first found him in North Seattle in a truck stolen from an acquaintance in Montana, Jasper told them he was in Seattle “searching for an old friend who he thought was in the welding program at South Seattle Community College.” The “old friend” is not named, and no other part of the charging documents reference SSCC or anything else related to West Seattle.

Update: 1 hospitalized, 1 arrested after Highway 509 crash

12:27 AM: Southbound Highway 509 just south of Cloverdale – between West Seattle and South Park – is closed right now because of a rollover crash. We don’t know details of the crash, but Seattle Fire units originally responded for a “heavy rescue” and Seattle Police units are being asked to help the State Patrol block off the area.

12:34 AM UPDATE: According to scanner traffic, a “mid-size car” rolled multiple times, and came to a rest with a 28-year-old man pinned under the car; he was quickly extricated by fire/rescue crews, but does NOT appear to have any serious injuries. He’s now being taken to a hospital to be checked out.

6:51 AM UPDATE: The official State Patrol media update is now available and as a commenter noted, it says two cars were involved, one hitting the other while both were traveling “at a high rate of speed.” The driver of the car that rolled, a 2003 Nissan 350, is now described as a 21-year-old Seattle man, taken to Harborview Medical Center; the other driver, a 22-year-old Seattle man, was booked into King County Jail, and the 2000 Daewoo Nubira he was driving was impounded. The WSP says the road was closed for five hours.

West Seattle Summer Fest countdown: Artistic touch-up

When you go to The Junction for West Seattle Summer Fest this Friday/Saturday/Sunday, check out what’s new at the southeast corner of California/Alaska: Visual artists from nearby Twilight Gallery have just given the vacant building a facelift:

Twilight co-proprietor Tracy Cilona explains that the work of visual artists Kristina Griffith and Larry Cyr “is part of an ongoing outreach between Twilight Gallery and Equity (Residential) to bring a creative vibrancy to that location, that enhances our community, our local businesses and features our many talented, local artists.” Tracy says the goal was to get the first round of art in place before Summer Fest, and tonight that goal was met:

She adds, “Stay tuned for more collaborations from Twilight Gallery. We have some great, creative ideas brewing to bring more local art to our unique neighborhood to keep our local businesses flourishing while we are in this transition.” (Unrelated to the art – you’re probably wondering when the two-building project at the corner is supposed to start, but after previously announced dates came and went, nothing’s been said publicly for months.)

P.S. Twilight is in charge of the Art Dive at Summer Fest again this year – look for the collection of artists/vendors and their handmade wares under the tent on California north of Oregon!

Hometown launch for West Seattleites’ Tomboy Exchange

West Seattle entrepreneurs Fran Dunaway and Naomi Gonzalez and their Tomboy Exchange clothing comprised a hometown hit tonight at Marination ma kai (WSB sponsor):

The occasion – a local launch party previewing the clothing collection we first told you about five months ago, back when Naomi and Fran had a crowdfunding campaign going. They met their goal and now their American-designed, American-made clothing, reflecting a timeless tomboy spirit, has arrived:

The Tomboy Exchange collection is available via an online boutique, where you can pre-order now.

West Seattle’s own ‘STP’ ride: (SW) Seattle to (SW) Portland, Sunday!

Among the many big events happening this weekend is the region’s most storied bicycle ride – Seattle to Portland, or STP for short. For those not going, West Seattle Bike Connections has set up its own STP ride right here on the peninsula this Sunday:

View Seattle to Portland – in West Seattle in a larger map

That’s SW Seattle Street in North Admiral southward to SW Portland Street in Gatewood, then heading back north to The Junction and West Seattle Summer Fest, where a post-ride discussion is planned at the GreenLife stage, touching on current issues including the Seattle Bicycle Master Plan Update.. WSBC president Don Brubeck says they’ve “recruited Stu Hennessey and Marge Evans to be ride leaders, and made it a joint ride with West Seattle Spokespeople and Cascade Bicycle Club.” It’ll be a family-friendly, 9.5-mile, easy-pace ride – meet at Hamilton Viewpoint Park at 9:45 am Sunday. Full details on the WSBC site, including some caveats – and reasons to join the ride!

West Seattle Crime Watch followup: Bail set for suspects in stolen-truck case

As promised, we’re following the case that broke here yesterday afternoon – a stolen truck spotted in the parking lot behind West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) by a WSB reader, who called police, leading to two arrests and the discovery of stolen property and two guns inside the truck.

Both suspects, the 20-year-old man found inside the truck and the 33-year-old woman he was waiting for, appeared for bail hearings at King County Jail today. Prosecuting Attorney’s Office spokesperson Dan Donohoe says bail was set at $20,000 for each. But since both suspects already had arrest warrants out for them, the total bail amounts are higher – $30,000 for him, just over $35,000 for her. They’re both due back in court Wednesday, by which time we will know the status of possible charges in this case.

We’re working to write up more details from the new court documents as well as from both suspects’ backgrounds, and will add to this story shortly.

ADDED 6 PM: The probable-cause documents tell the story along the lines reported here Sunday, with a few additional details:

More than a ‘shop local’ reminder: ‘West Seattle – We Have That!’

When you come to The Junction for West Seattle Summer Fest this Friday, Saturday, and/or Sunday, visit the Info Booth, not just to say hi to us and the folks there with us, but also to get a brand-new cling showing your West Seattle pride with the slogan above. It’s part of the “why independent local businesses matter” conversation we’ve been talking about here for weeks now. It’s explained as follows by Susan Melrose of the West Seattle Junction Association – but it’s about MORE than The Junction; businesses and community members from all over the peninsula are collaborating:

West Seattle businesses are uniting for, West Seattle – WE HAVE THAT!

Watch this summer for the campaign to unfold…

§ We’ll be TALKING about the importance of local businesses and the role they play in our community.
§ We’ll be ENGAGING our community to explore how we can strengthen our partnership.
§ And we’ll be APPEALING to the neighborhood to shop at local businesses to help West Seattle thrive.

Our local business flavor is a big part of what we love about our ‘hood. West Seattle is awesome because whether you’re talking about cool shops, the best ice cream, stellar parks, people who care, the walk-all-ways intersection, or the best sunsets in Seattle, we can all say, West Seattle – WE HAVE THAT! Show your neighborhood pride by finding and displaying a We Have That sticker at the West Seattle Summer Fest info booth.

This effort is a partnership between West Seattle businesses, the West Seattle Junction Association, and the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce.

During Summer Fest, you’ll find the info booth right in the heart of The Junction at California/Alaska. And year-round, you’ll find your independent local businesses all over the peninsula – provided community support continues. (That goes for us, too, and we’re saying thank you for YOUR support, right here and right now.)

Seal Sitters sculpture’s next step: Alki site prep work

Work is under way east of the Alki Bathhouse to get the site ready for the harbor seal mom-and-pup sculpture that artist Georgia Gerber is creating for Seal Sitters, whose David Hutchinson tells us that asphalt removal was finished this morning. He says the “rocks” that will be part of the installation will be placed there by Turnstone Construction tomorrow, and the artist will bring her unfinished sculpture to help with the placement. It’ll be taken back to the studio for completion afterward; site prep will be done within a week and a half, and the fence will come down then. Sculpture installation is expected by late August, with a dedication event scheduled for September 8th, according to the project’s infopage on the Seal Sitters website.

Of note today: The Delridge Way repaving project shifts to Phase 4, Holden to Orchard, with no detour necessary this time because that stretch of Delridge is wide enough for one lane to be kept open each way while work proceeds.

ADDED 9:04 AM: If you drive to or through the Eastside, take note of what’s planned next weekend, per WSDOT:

Beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, July 12, until 5 a.m. Monday, July 15, all northbound lanes of I-405 will close through downtown Bellevue for concrete panel replacement, while the SR 520 floating bridge will close for its annual inspection, and culvert installation.

We are continuing to count down to West Seattle Summer Fest (co-sponsored by WSB) next Friday/Saturday/Sunday (July 12-14) and to the night before, which is a street party all its own, once the central blocks of California and Alaska close for Summer Fest setup. Four things to note so far for Thursday night (and if you know of more, PLEASE let us know!):

West Seattle Art Walk: 6-9 pm Thursday. See the summer venue list here, and artist previews on the official website
Bubbleman outside Elliott Bay Brewery, a tradition (just confirmed today; checking on time)
Yada Yada Blues Band outside West 5 around 7:30 pm (just confirmed today; p.s., AFTER Summer Fest, West 5 will be closed a few days for upgrades, so enjoy them extra in the week ahead)
Bret Wiggins‘ Elvis stylings outside WSB sponsor La Romanza Bistro, first of 2 sets at 6:30 pm (as noted here last Wednesday)

The Junction streets close at 6 pm Thursday (July 11th). See you there on Thursday night AND for the ensuing three-day party (official Summer Fest website here; quick links in our Friday countdown report).

West Seattle road-work reminder: Delridge repaving to start Phase 4 tomorrow

Reminder if you drive on Delridge Way SW – the repaving project is scheduled to move into Phase 4 tomorrow (Monday), which means the work zone will shift north, to the section between SW Orchard and SW Holden. SDOT says no detour will be needed “as the roadway is wide enough to maintain one lane of traffic each way.”

ADDED MONDAY: However – the Phase 3 zone southbound detour continues a few more days for striping and other details.

West Seattle Crime Watch: WSB reader finds stolen truck; police arrest 2, find stolen property, guns inside

(UPDATED 11:02 PM with new details about suspects)

ORIGINAL STORY, 2:39 PM: Several people e-mailed to ask about that police activity in the back parking lot at West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor). Bottom line, a stolen truck’s been recovered and two people have been detained, thanks to a tip from a WSB reader. Here’s how it unfolded:

WSB’s Katie Meyer heard scanner traffic with a police dispatcher sending officers to Thriftway because a caller reported seeing a stolen vehicle that had been featured here on WSB. We subsequently went over to check out the situation – and in the meantime heard from the tipster, James, who tells us he was shopping at Thriftway when he spotted the truck, recalling it from this West Seattle Crime Watch report published early Friday – a Nissan Frontier stolen just south of the city limits. He also sent us this photo taken after police arrived:

Police ordered that man out of the truck at gunpoint (standard procedure for felonies such as auto theft). When we talked with officers at the scene a bit later, they told us he was waiting for a female companion to come back from shopping inside the store – which is where police caught up with her, taking both into custody. James also reports seeing police find at least one gun: “As I was pulling away, to get my ice cream home, it looked as though officers had recovered a revolver from the truck – they were holding it like a stinky sock, so I suspect it is evidence. It is also a good reminder to not get overly involved and to let the police handle this sort of thing.”

We’ll do our best to follow up on this and see what we can find out about the suspects and where the case goes from here.

ADDED 2:52 PM: David, who had been shopping at the store with his girlfriend just before the arrests, e-mailed us to describe what he saw: “On our way to the car we had seen a police car enter the parking lot from California with its lights on, but no siren … (then) four additional police cars with lights on pulled into the parking lot from the other side … Then the officers got out of the cars and drew their guns in our direction and shouted ‘Driver, get out of the car!’ and they asked us to move aside quickly – we hadn’t even seen the guy sitting in a black pickup truck right near us. We watched from the sidewalk behind Thriftway as the driver got out and they arrested him. They also took a woman into custody shortly thereafter. After a short while one of the officers pulled a dark handgun from the truck and put it in a bag.”

ADDED 4:30 PM: Received from the truck’s owners:

Nathan I would very much like to thank the West Seattle Blog and the ever-searching eyes of its readers (Thanks, James! You rock)) for helping to locate our missing vehicle and apprehend the persons responsible for its theft. We hope to see them in court! What a great service the WSB provides for our community. In talking to the Seattle Police Department they had nothing but high praise for the WSB and its readers.

The truck had minimal damage, although the inside is pretty trashed. They even managed to rip the seats on a two month old pickup? There were several stolen items recovered, that were not ours, but very strangely from another Nathan Adams! Hopefully those items will make it back to their rightful owner. Word of warning to the WSB readers, the thief had a master key and was able to steal the truck with ease. We are taking extra precautions to make sure nothing like this happens to either of our vehicles in the future. Something for everyone to think about.

Thanks again for helping us recover our pickup. We so greatly appreciate it.

Michale Farrar
Nathan Adams

7:51 PM UPDATE: Turns out police found more than the aforementioned handgun – this case has now turned up on SPD Blotter, where the story includes:

… The stolen truck had weapons inside including a .22 caliber revolver and a loaded shotgun. The truck was packed with stolen property taken from a number of burglaries ( jewelry, laptops, etc.) and carprowls in both the city and KCSO’s jurisdiction. It took multiple officers hours to catalog and process all of the stolen items. The female suspect also had outstanding burglary warrants. Both suspects were booked into the King County Jail for the felony charges. Detectives will handle the follow up investigation.

11:02 PM UPDATE: More details on the 20-year-old man and 33-year-old woman arrested – both have records; hers dates back 20 years. According to the King County Jail Register, she is being held for investigation of unlawful firearms possession and for a $15,075 warrant related to a failure to appear in a case involving an attempted burglary in south King County last year. Off-and-on technical trouble is still keeping us from bringing up details on his booking, but his record shows a guilty plea to a drug charge last year. Court documents show the drugs were found when he was arrested on suspicion of car prowling – in the 9400 block of 25th SW, four blocks from the scene of the theft of the truck in which he was found today.

MONDAY MORNING NOTE: Once the jail-register website started working again, we found that this is the sixth time in jail for the male suspect in the past year. He is being held for investigation of car theft, investigation of stolen property, and failure-to-appear warrants.

Help make wishes come true – by getting out on the greens with the West Seattle Eagles Auxiliary, whose past Madam President Amy McGrath shares the invitation to this upcoming tournament:

Since 1995, The West Seattle Eagles Ladies Auxiliary has raised over $95,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska and Washington by holding various fundraisers. At three years of age and suffering from a brain tumor, Craig Wilkerson was granted his “wish” to drive a race car. He passed away shortly after his “wish” was granted, spurring his grandmother, Past Madam President Mary Lou Wilkerson, to start raising funds for the program. Now in its 16th year, the Craig Wilkerson Golf Tournament is our largest fundraiser of the year.

The tournament is open to everyone and will be held at Jefferson Golf Course Saturday, August 17th. Cost is $80 per golfer, if preregistered and paid by August 1. After August 1, cost is $85 per golfer. Deadline for entry is August 10. Entry fee includes dinner at the West Seattle Eagles after the tournament. We will also be holding a live and silent auction and have entertainment to follow dinner.

Here’s the printable entry form.
