West Seattle weather: ‘Excessive Heat Watch’ for Thurs.-Fri.

The weather alert we mentioned this morning has gone up a notch or two: We are now up to an Excessive Heat Watch alert for Thursday and Friday, which the National Weather Service declares are “likely to be among the hottest days of the year,” possibly the mid-90s here. (The recent mini-heatwave officially peaked at 93.) The warning is currently expected to kick in Thursday afternoon and remain in effect through Friday night. We’ll keep an eye on the forecast as it evolves.

I was driving down 4th this PM when, from the corner of my eye, I saw a sign for AC rentals!!! Brilliant! The thought had never occurred to me to *rent* one, Seattle native that I am. If the basement warms up, I am going for the rental. Gotta’ keep the aging dood cool…

So folks know: the top 18″ of Lake Washington is like bath water right now and perfect for sunrise swims. Enjoy!

In any other city it is called summer. Here it is called “Excessive Heat Watch” 2012!!

  • Harry Reems August 14, 2012 (8:52 pm)

    Well said Wally.

Enjoy it while it lasts, in a couple of short months it will be cold, rainy, and miserable.

  • Kevin August 14, 2012 (9:13 pm)

@westseattledood – THIS redhead (me), is already counting the days until the rain and gray returns!
    .
As for you Harry… the coming months are MY favorite season of the year :)

agree Kevin; excited to see some trees changing color; can hardly wait for Fall; premier temp for me is 60; dread HOT days

westseattledood; where did you see ac rentals? curious what they would rent for
    ~
btw, at Target the other day, all the ac units were on sale
    ~
best purchase I ever made was a portable ac; off Craig’s list last year; love love love it; since 1st day I brought it home, wondered why the hell I waited so long (went through that horrific week of 103+ three years ago without ac; never again)

Saw the records today on the news – interesting 92 is the record for today and 44 was the low set in 1955!

I’ve been here my whole life and I’m a heat hater. I live with a Bostonian who makes fun of me when its hot because I cease functioning. He told my 4-year-old yesterday ‘Your mother is a snow cone who melts in the heat.’ Pretty much!

  • G August 15, 2012 (12:43 am)

As a native, I’ve come to dread the winters here with the monotonous overcast and drizzle.

Please be careful to not leave pets in vehicles even for a minute, even if the windows are rolled down, not even in the shade. Dogs don’t sweat and can overheat in minutes. Scan parked cars for pets and if you see one, find the owner or call the police-you may very well save a life. Thank you!

So being the Non endorsed WSB meteorologist I feel I should add to the discussion on the up coming heat.

I will start with a bunch of technical jargon and then explain in lamens terms.

” With 850 mb temps rising about 3-4c today I expect highs 5-8 degrees warmer area-wide. Offshore flow may even allow for slightly more warming as it begins to kick in by afternoon. Highs 94-99 look good, I wouldn’t rule out a 100 in isolated spots this afternoon.

Another 1-2c of warming on Thursday with peak offshore flow Thursday afternoon should allow for another 3-5 degrees of warming, for highs 98-103.

On Friday thermal trough moves over the southwest Wa area by midday which will end the offshore flow in the boundary layer, however 850 mb temps of 25c will mostly compensate for this. I also expect a decent superadiabatic layer in the lowest 5-10 mb of the atmosphere. My prediction is for 101-105 for Friday’s highs.

So for those of you who just read the above text and are scratching your heads going ” HUH ” ???

In essence we are going to get very hot on Thursday/Friday and early Saturday. A thermal trough is set to move into the area and along with an adiabatic boundary allow for some of the strongest compression of the summer and with VERY strong offshore flow enhance temps skyward, I would not be surprised to see some areas in the south sound peak @ 102F or higher especially Friday with the central sound likely around the 100F to 106F mark Friday, Thursday should have peak temps in the 99F to 104F area. If you are heading to PDX ( Portland ) prepare for temps on Thursday anywhere from 99F to 104F and Friday in the 100F to 108F ( warmer the further south you go ) anf then as if the heat weren’t enough the models are STILL showing a T-storm threat on Saturday night/ Sunday morning however the newest output indicates a VERY strong marine push could reduce the T-storm threat significantly, I and my cohorts will know more by Thursday/Friday morning as the updated models come out so don’t get your T-storm hopes up JUST YET!

    This is DANGEROUS HEAT
    Stay Safe
    Stay hydrated
    Check on family and friends

I’m with those who are just hunkering down until our awesome fall weather arrives. I had hoped that we wouldn’t be above the mid-80’s all summer, but no such luck. Nothing like the house being 88F when it is time to go to bed.

  • DCo August 15, 2012 (8:51 am)

Ugh. I can’t wait for fall, drizzle, and snow :)
My house already feels too hot

  • bsmomma August 15, 2012 (9:18 am)

Westseattledood……….did you catch the name of the ac rental place? Or a cross street??????

  • NorDel August 15, 2012 (9:20 am)

Please be careful to not leave children in vehicles even for a minute, even if the windows are rolled down, not even in the shade. Children sweat, but can overheat in minutes. • datamuse August 15, 2012 (10:19 am)

I’m enjoying the heat while it lasts. I need to store it up for when January rolls around.

  • T-Rex August 15, 2012 (10:51 am)

CJ, thank you for the heads up for people who leave their pets in the car. I leave nasty notes on the windshield when I see this as it is SO CRUEL AND SO STUPID!!!!!!!!!!Even in the winter time, if the sun is out it can be dangerous.

I understand that our pets love to go for a ride, but use your brain people!!!!

  • Justin August 15, 2012 (11:15 am)

On another note, the hot weather tomorrow will make Aug. 16 the warmest in Seattle since the day Elvis died.

  • Patrick August 15, 2012 (11:51 am)

BTW, Excessive heat watch has been upgraded to a warning, please stay safe folks

  • Aaron August 15, 2012 (12:57 pm)

Sounds like I’ll be sleeping on the basement floor this week!

  • nichole August 15, 2012 (1:23 pm)

Regarding kids in cars and the heat….kids just should never be left in cars alone EVER! I once called the police after a grocery store refused to announce over their speakers that a toddler was crying alone in a car…found out later parents had been on the run from CPS…very greatful I had made that call.

  • bsmomma August 15, 2012 (2:26 pm)

I’m picking up 2 “Swamp Coolers” tonight. I only need one but had to take both! Anyone want to go in on them? I pay $45……..you pay $45????? These things are awesome!!!! They’re on CL! I’ve confirmed to pick up at 5:30!

  • DCo August 15, 2012 (2:28 pm)

I saw two window AC’s on sale at Target Westwood Village around 11:00 am!

  • Ron August 15, 2012 (7:34 pm)

lol, Seattleites are such wimps when it comes to hot/cold weather.

I just find it really funny that 30 deg celsius is “excessive heat”.

    • WSB August 15, 2012 (7:49 pm)

It’s all relative. In Las Vegas, where I lived for a while, it would almost be a cold snap. Excessive heat alerts required 115 expected degrees or so. Bleh.

  • bsmomma August 15, 2012 (9:14 pm)

In our defense, I’m from Michigan and I used to think the same thing about Seattleites being wimps about the heat and snow but now 30 years later I think people that love the 100 deg weather are crazy!! Mind you, I could handle the heat if I was somewhere tropical or with a pool and ac! Atleast we always have a nice breeze and it’s not smack you in the face humid! And the snow………the midwest does not have all our hills!

  • NorDel August 15, 2012 (11:52 pm)

Nichole- I was kidding. People freak out about pets, but seem to think it ok to leave kids. Terrible. I’ve called a time or two about infants sleeping in carseats and parents inside an air conditioned building watching through the window. I completely agree. I was just being a brat about the pet comment because I feel the same way you do about children in cars.

Sorry, comment time is over.
