West Seattle Monday: Trash; traffic; voting; business reopens…

Forgive us one last Blue Angels photo (shared via Flickr) … Doug B caught support C-130 “Fat Albert” after its final run on Sunday – a crew member always pops up from the top hatch as it taxis, waving the flag. (We’re checking on their Seattle departure schedule – it’s usually post-Seafair Tuesday. Update: they left this morning.) Now, on to highlights from the WSB West Seattle Events Calendar for today/tonight … plus updates on ongoing stories:

TRASH/RECYCLING ‘BACK TO NORMAL’: That’s what Waste Management spokesperson Robin Freedman told us on Sunday after we checked back to see if Monday/Tuesday customers would get any catchup for recycling this week. So whatever service you would NORMALLY get today or tomorrow, plan for that – plus extra – on your pickup morning, advises WM. And if you are missed (including if you were a Wednesday customer who did NOT get catchup service on Saturday), the city says you can report it online – go here (look for the link at upper left).

TRAFFIC ALERT FOR TONIGHT: Southbound 99/Alaskan Way Viaduct will NOT be closed tonight (or tomorrow) because the westbound Spokane Street Viaduct WILL be closed those two nights (meaning no West Seattle Bridge access from I-5 or Beacon Hill).

BALLOT DROPOFF VAN: Second-to-last day to get your ballot mailed (must have stamps) or dropped off (no stamps needed) – you can do the latter without leaving West Seattle; go to the southwest side of the West Seattle Stadium parking lot (turn off 35th just south of Avalon), 10 am-5 pm and look for the “ballot dropoff van” (here’s our story, with a photo, from Friday). Tomorrow’s your last chance to vote, and the van will be back 7 am-8 pm.

BUSINESS REOPENS IN NEW LOCATION: The photo above is from Young at Art proprietor Theresa, taken inside their new location at Fauntleroy/Raymond, where they’re reopening today, about a week after moving from the future development site at 42nd/Alaska/California. She says they’ll have “open studio” and art camps resuming today, with their “action painting room” returning in a few weeks. Phone number’s the same (206-937-0736), and she says there’s still room in art camp the second and third week of this month.

WOMEN’S STANDUP-PADDLEBOARD NIGHT: At Alki Kayak Tours at Seacrest Boathouse, 6-9 pm, tonight and every summer Monday night.

BALLROOM DANCING @ KENYON HALL: Balorico’s new session of classes starts tonight; details here.

Can you post the link to report missed trash service? My service normally runs on Tuesday and didn’t happen last week — seems to be no mention of missed Tuesday customers in the media.

WM link not working. Could you please try it again. Thanks.

WM is back to normal alright. For 2 weeks my garbage has collected neatly at the end of my driveway. Now its all over the alley!

    So p-o’d!!!!
I set out the week’s extra waste in another can w/lid, marked with two signs: TRASH. WM didn’t touch it. When he drove by again, I asked him why, and he said it was too big. Too big?–it was half-full, in a normal-sized can. So, I dumped the contents into the small receptacle (which had been emptied), and I had to run after him before he’d take it. This was cute!
    NOT!

Sorry about the link, fixing it. The online link is from the upper left of this SPU page:

When you click “report missed collections,” it will open a new window with the start of the form. – TR

Just drove from Alki to Admiral SafeWay. Neither North Admiral nor Alki Neighborhoods had Recycle or WM pick up…

  • Carraig na Splinkeen August 6, 2012 (6:20 pm)

No trash, recycle, or food waste picked up in Alki area. Reported on the form. Easy to use…thanks WSB!

In Admiral, trash got picked up about 4, clean green about 6. Still no recycle. Did they promise recycle or not?

    • WSB August 6, 2012 (7:54 pm)

Only if this was your regular recycling day. The WM spokesperson stressed that they are back to regular service, in terms of what gets picked up on what day (but put out extra for the first post-strike pickup). However, I wouldn’t pull the carts back in yet. We were in the Alki area just after 7 pm and saw two WM trucks still on the job …

Our garbage & yard waste was picked up finally, about 7pm today in Alki @63rd & Hinds. However, the recycling which has been sitting there since last Mon, July 30th was NOT!
Received a phone call from SPU on Sunday afternoon saying if you are a Monday pickup, to put out all three carts.
Just reported the missed pickup again, using the online form.

Marge – That’s bizarre that SPU would say that, considering its contractor WM was saying (at least when I asked their main media rep) that they would NOT make up recycle pickups till the next scheduled day. I see the SPU home page says “put out all carts on your pickup day” which certainly would sound like what YOU heard. Will ask them both about it tomorrow, I don’t have much hope of reaching anyone tonight – TR

I saved the message – the SPU spokesperson says:
Monday customers should put all carts – garbage, yard waste, and recycling – out before 7am… if carts are not collected on Monday, please report them

  • work downtown August 7, 2012 (6:08 am)

I too was told to leave all garbage and recycling out on Monday – everything except recycling got picked up so I went online and reported it. Got an email back that said I should leave it out 2 more business days and if not picked up by then report it again. Sounds like they are trying.

Sorry, comment time is over.
