Update: Driver hurt in Highland Park truck crash

7:01 AM: At least one TV chopper is over Highland Park. There’s a crash at 15th and Holden. We’re en route.

7:11 AM UPDATE: A Toyota pickup has gone off the road and into a yard. Police have Holden shut down right now between 14th and 16th but the tow truck is already there so it might not be for too long. At least one person is hurt – a private ambulance is on scene.

7:26 AM UPDATE: Police at the scene tell us the truck’s driver was the one taken to the hospital – private ambulance generally means NOT life-threatening injuries – and was alone in the truck. We’re waiting for the tow truck to get the truck out of the yard to check on possible damage to the house, which neighbors say was unoccupied.

7:37 AM UPDATE: It doesn’t appear the house was hit; the damage looks to be confined to the fence the truck went through, and the grassy slope/yard. (Thanks to everyone who texted and e-mailed us about the chopper, which is what tipped us to the fact that what was only a medic call on the 911 log was actually a crash.)

8:55 AM: Went back to the scene a little while ago and SW Holden is completely clear again.

I can hear the helicopter right now, and it’s been circling for at least 10 minutes. I live right near 16th & Holden.

Chopper seems to have left btw–I heard it fly off.

I wonder if it had anything to do with the oil slick that was ALL THE WAY down highland park way- i reported to police last night as i found myself fishtailing all the way up the hill and didn’t stop having slick tires until well after 16th and holden…

People drive too fast on this stretch of road. I hope the injury is not serious. Thanks for your coverage.

CZ, one person messaged us last night about that; I don’t know which direction the truck was traveling in, but after that message, we wound up coming back from an errand all the way UP Highland Park Way from Marginal, then onto Holden, and there was no problem, around 10:30-11 pm. – TR

The best time to watch is about 7-9am. Traffic heading eastbound backs way up on the arterial and starts zipping around through the neighborhood. Also we know of at least 3 other accidents. It’s a twisty little bit of arterial that’s overcrowded during rush hours with school children and pedestrians also trying to use and cross. I believe a traffic seminar last year identified a possible pedestrian cross walk site location to be added.

Been there in the mornings too. I just meant the fuel spill report – was wary of slick coming up last night but it wasn’t apparent westbound. Had to take the HP Way route home since late last night the Viaduct was still closed and traveling down 1st from downtown was more convenient than trying to get to I-5. Anyway, I don’t think there’ll be much more emerging on this, but since it stirred up the choppers, it became of higher interest! We’re going back shortly to verify that Holden reopened – TR

Holden becomes a speed way for some drivers. I wish everyone would SLOW DOWN for pedestrians.

thanks for the reply on oil slick- it was heavy both lanes from off-ramp from 1st ave so bridge all the way up both lanes west bound on Highland pkwy…i reported around 8pm…perhaps they were able to mitigate by the time WSB drove up?

C_Zen & WSB; THAT explains why there was a fire truck sitting at the bottom of HighlandParkDrive @ W.Marginal, purposely blocking entrance to westbound up the hill, with orange traffic cones blocking main lane and the yield lane coming from southbound W.Marginal. I was coming down the hill, eastbound looking over at what caused the commotion.., there was none. I thought it strange there was no accident scene, debris, etc. This was about 7:50pm last night. They must’ve responded to C_Zen’s call or others.

I live on the same block as this house. This is not the only incident for them. Not too long ago they had a similar incident that took down their fence. It would be great for people traveling on Holden to slow down and PAY ATTENTION! I’ve come down Holden from HP Way to turn right onto 15th and more often than not the person behind isn’t paying attention, (even tho I have my blinker on) and they have to swerve to avoid hitting my car. I’m just happy that no one inside was hurt or their cute dogs who are sometimes out in the yard were not hurt. Please slow down!

Sorry, comment time is over.
