West Seattle Crime Watch: Crash search; two break-ins

Happening as of a short time ago in the Admiral District – police are looking for a suspected hit-run driver who apparently took off after hitting a parked car at California/Hill (the red one in our photo) and then a utility pole. We’ll check with police later to see if they ever found the hit-run driver (no description at this point). No serious injuries reported.

Meantime, also in West Seattle Crime Watch this morning, two reader reports about recent burglaries – read on:

From a resident who did not want to be identified:

My house was burglarized sometime before 5:00 PM on Tuesday. The burglars’ MO sounds very similar to another report of a robbery on 36th & Myrtle. The thief or thieves kicked in the back door, took small electronics (laptop, camera, iphone) , a jar of coins and some jewelry. They opened drawers and closets in the bedroom and tossed everything onto the floor. Needless to say an alarm system is now our Christmas present to ourselves.

BTW – SPD was so thoughtful. I had come home first and called the police when I saw the back door. I mentioned that my husband was at the gym and would not be home for an hour and not reachable by cell. He told me later that the officers went to the gym after they left the house and found him and told him what happened.

And TJ just reported this break-in from a week earlier:

On Tuesday the 6th of December, I arrived home at 5 pm on the 2500 block of 56th street to discover my house burglarized. The thieves broke the basement window, opened it and crawled through. They took my tv, other electronics, and jewelry. They then broke the back gate on their way out.

As noted in our coverage of a police briefing at the Pigeon Point Neighborhood Council meeting on Monday night, groups of burglars are said to be working not just West Seattle but other areas of the region, and police are eager to catch them – so be extra watchful and if you see anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to call 911.

Why are vehicles on opposite side of street? Must have been a doozy.

  • MEJ December 14, 2011 (11:33 am)

Why is the driver of the hit-run vehicle referred to as “suspected”, and further described as having “apparently” left the scene? The person responsible IS a hit-run driver (not “suspected”), and then they got the hell out of there. Nothing “apparent” about it. Save the modifying language for the day this jerk (oops, suspected jerk) is caught.

Because police told us at the scene that’s what they THOUGHT had happened, but were still sorting it out. If you saw it happen and saw the person bolt, great. I don’t have benefit of that knowledge, so when police tell us that’s what they believe happened, I’m going to modify it. If it’s the owner of the black vehicle, for example, and they were found dazed in the bushes a while later, they’re not a hit-run driver. – TR

MEJ: calling someone a “suspect” until tried and found guilty is not only common practice, it’s actually one of the benefits of living in America. We don’t claim someone’s guilty without formally considering the evidence. Sometimes that seems silly, I know, but that’s kind of a nice feature of our country.

Jar of coins stolen? I hope you checked the Coinstar at QFC!
Update on my burglar from Sept. 2009. One additional buglary guilty plea, walked away from treatment program, warrant, arrest and now out on the streets.
