“I want you to know, you have put a hole in our hearts that will always be there,” murder victim Steve Bushaw‘s mother told one of her son’s killers in court this afternoon.

Meg Bushaw was speaking directly to Danny O’Neal, one of two men who fired their guns at her son outside Talarico’s in The Junction on Super Bowl Sunday night in 2009.

She was one of more than a dozen members of Steve Bushaw’s family who were in the courtroom of Superior Court Judge Joan DuBuque, for what was supposed to be the sentencing of both “triggermen” who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder – O’Neal and John Sylve. This comes one month after a jury found the killing’s so-called mastermind, Bryce Huber, guilty of first-degree murder; he has already been sentenced to almost 32 years in prison.

The two triggermen were to be sentenced separately, explained as being necessary because there weren’t enough court deputies to bring them into, and guard them in, the courtroom at the same time – but after Sylve was brought in, his lawyer asked for a continuance, because for reasons unknown, Sylve’s family had not shown up. The prosecutor, judge, and family all agreed to the delay.

Before that, Judge DuBuque sentenced O’Neal to the 183 months recommended by prosecutor Jeff Baird – including 60 months (five years) because a gun was involved.

O’Neal’s mother Alfreda Mitchell was among those speaking on his behalf. She turned to address the Bushaw family, crying as she said that her son had previously “always been a person that has made wise choices … I don’t even know if he understands what happened. I don’t expect you to forgive him, because I know what I would feel if I was sitting in your position.” His wife and older sister also turned to face the Bushaw family and apologize, expressing hope they could find forgiveness someday. Then, O’Neal himself did the same, following it with an apology to his own family, including his daughter. And he insisted, “I didn’t go (to West Seattle) that night planning to kill your son in the middle of the street in front of no less than 30 people.”

As she announced the sentence, Judge DuBuque called the case overall “tragic,” without easy answers as to why the killing happened. (O’Neal said in court that he didn’t believe Steve Bushaw was responsible for the home-invasion robbery that was described as the motive.)

Sylve’s sentencing is now scheduled for November 4th. November is also when another hearing is scheduled in the matter of whether the fourth defendant in the case, Brandon Chaney, will be retried – the jury that found Huber guilty could not agree on Chaney’s innocence or guilt.

We will add more details of the hearing, and photos, shortly.

Then what did you “plan”? You’ve got to be kidding me!!! You killed someone just “because”? You’re a disgrace to humanity and should be punished severely…I don’t think your sentence is long enough!

How on earth can you murder someone and only get 183 months?! If my math is correct that is only a little over 15 years. What in the hell is wrong with our judicial system that a confessed murderer is only sentenced to 15 years? All of these pathetic monkeys should have gotten no less than life with NO possibility of parole. So if I’m not mistaken this piece of chit that was sentenced today may be parolled in under 10 years? What the phuck is wrong with our judicial system?! We pay all this tax money and lawyers and judges and everyone else in the judical system get paid pretty damn well and this is the best you guys can do? PATHETIC!!! The system is failing us. Government is failing us. It’s a scary thought to think that a monkey, not a person, but a monkey that murders an innocent person will be free to walk the streets in 15 years or less if the stupid monkey behaves well behind bars. Our system is phucked

So what do we sentence drug dealers to, even if their are “low level” and even if its “just pot”. They’re poisoning our children with drugs. Lets not pretend we’re dealing with innocent angels here.

Someone PLEASE explain to me how an admitted gunman got LESS THAN HALF the time someone else was convicted for, for “masterminding” a murder….who didn’t “mastermind” anything…in retaliation for the home invasion of a “major drug dealer” who is not a major drug dealer….The police are not doing their job…and I LOVE how inaccurate the media is. Infuriating.

First Please Do Not Hate on the Judge!!! This whole situation is a Loss for All involved!!! It does seem unfair that someone whom knowing put a firearm on Thier person even though they say they thought they only would be involved with a “Beat Down” gets walk the Earth still while Another Soul has had that taken away from them. I do have more tolerance for this person then for the mastermind whom shows no true remorse, got all of these individuals together, called Stevie out to have a drink, denied him being a friend after he masterminded his killing, took vacations after the event, and ruined many lives. I feel that the family of this shooter was remorseful and respectful of the situation. They acknowledged their loved ones wrong doing! With this I feel Hope! I feel that the masterminds family is in denial and this I believe is the problem! They helped to create this and continue to allow behavior that is unacceptable! Shame on You!!! As far as the comment that was made about the pot dealings from people : You should look towards the alcohol industry for the blame. It seems to be the reason these individuals say the plotted a murder and executed it. As Bryce said there was a lot of alcohol involved that night when the murder took place. Pot was never mentioned! Go after the big alcohol companies because apparently it causes some to actually play out murder plots!!!

Sorry, comment time is over.
