Alaskan Way Viaduct traffic alert: Lane closures Saturday

This could cause some backups, even on a Saturday, so here’s the heads-up from SDOT:

On Saturday, September 3, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will be removing and repairing expansion joints on the Alaskan Way Viaduct southbound. They will be working from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the Alaskan Way Viaduct Extension where the roadway increases from two to three lanes near S Hanford Street. In order to accomplish the work, the SDOT crew will move from left to right closing two of the three lanes at a time. Motorists should expect to slow down and be prepared to shift lanes as they pass by the work zone.

Again… why can’t these crews do the work IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT LIKE IN OTHER MAJOR METROPOLITAN CITIES IN THIS COUNTRY??? Please, oh please, let me get to and from Bumbershoot this weekend without having to sit on the viaduct for the same 45-60 minutes I’ve been experiencing DAILY as a 9-5 commuter.

Will I ever be able to leave WS without first checking to see roads are open or closed? Heaven help the emergency vehicles trying to get in and out of WS for the next however many years.

These sudden closure announcements are making it very hard to pre-plan to do anything from downtown north on any given weekend. Don’t see why these closures can’t be announced earlier. Even a rolling lane closure is a problem with the traffic volume on a Saturday, esp with Bumbershoot.

Well, you can accuse us of understatement :)

And this is why I haven’t left WS on the weekend in weeks.

WTG SDOT on lane closures once again during one of the most busiest weekends for events in Seattle.

Sorry, comment time is over.
