West Seattle Summer Fest 2011, night 2: Saturday evening begins

If you haven’t browsed the Art Dive at West Seattle Summer Fest 2011, come back and take a look. WSB contributor Deanie Schwarz found Jon, above, with … coyote, um, memorabilia. Not from here, he insists, from NY. Another sight not to be missed, even if you’re not participating – Hack-cycle, which has yielded some creations, like this one we saw circling around by Junction Plaza Park:

Now that Night 2 of Summer Fest is under way, the people are the sights – whether artists, vendors, performers, or festivalgoers. One of the final activities of the day in the informal California/Alaska performance area was belly-dancer Nadira:

Hers was the second belly-dancing performance of the day; one more is scheduled tomorrow (1 pm), after the noon “Minute to Win It” presented by TILA Real Estate. Meantime, music goes till midnight tonight – Curtains For You is up at 7:30, The Bend at 8:45, The Staxx Brothers at 10 pm, and Head Like A Kite wraps up the night at 11:15 pm. And you never know when you might see performers just wandering in the street – it happened just a little while ago:

Food stands are open till 8, but lots of Junction restaurants are open longer, and many have outdoor seating. Most of the vendors have rolled up too. We’ll have some more photos/video to add later, including many more sights from Day 2!

What does it matter if it’s from here or there? An animal must die for us to acquire its fur and that is not a humane act. I am disappointed the West Seattle Blog is promoting this guys wares.

    I oppose fur products.

Maybe it was roadkill? Waste not…

Coyotes are a nuisance, they prey on livestock, as well as household pets. Let’s not forget the animals who die every day for people to eat – look at the supermarket where people buy their food. 95+% of Americans have not yet embraced vegetarianism.

According to contributor Deanie, the guy also has “coyote skulls, raccoon tails and alligator skulls.” As anyone who reads WSB regularly knows, we report on local wildlife regularly and provide links for coexistence information. She provided the information that he said the coyote tail wasn’t from around here – the circumstances of its original procurement, I don’t know, but when she provided that information, I thought it was worth including. I would also note that we are reporting, not promoting. Doesn’t mean I like the fact some guy is selling a coyote tail, but if I only showed things I like, this wouldn’t be much of a news site. Today I was lucky to have a couple contributors roaming for unusual or lively sights, and I still have a few dozen photos to put up separately before night’s end. – TR

I have yet to met anyone who eats coyote.

    Hey folks,

Jon also sells fossils – lots of them. And assorted jewelry and art he’s collected from world travels. I don’t know how this particular New York furrier who supplies the “scraps”, as Jon referred to them, procures the fur, but it is a leap to assume anything about how the animals met their demise or why and that information wasn’t made available to me.

I am a meat eater and I am offended by this. I am all for eating animals but why we need to show off the body parts like trophy’s is beyond me. I think a screw or two might be loose.. this would also include rabbit feet and hunters with deer heads on their walls…although just to be clear I would eat them

I guarantee if a bear was in the area preying upon our pets, nobody here would be encouraging ‘coexistence’. Coyote’s are all fine and dandy but THEY ARE NUISANCES in an urban setting.

Maybe that counts as news because it’s unusual, but it’s really hard for me to look at a picture of mutilated animal parts, especially with a guy happily holding them up. I wish this hadn’t been part of this report, but if it had to be there, keeping it to a written description rather than including what is to me a disgusting photo would have been better.

All of you who claim to be meat eaters have the nerve to kill your on food? You know go to the farm and cut that pigs throut and let it bleed out and then butcher it. I bet none of you on this post could ever do it. We all eat cow or pig that some cruel guy killed with out a blink of an eye. Were all linning up for those bbq beef or chicken sticks at the fair. So get use to it ,man is at the top of the food chain. And until evolution takes away our pearly whites man was ment to eat dead animals.

I’m totally offended by the guy in the light blue shirt with the funny hat on. Totally a fashion faux pas.

hey foy boy, I Lived on a farm and we did slaughter our own pigs but Im not driving around with pig ears on my cars antenna, I understand back in the day when we had to use the fur and bones for clothes and tools, But I just don’t get the mentality of displaying an animals body part like it’s some kind of trophy. Does it make the displayer of such an item feel more manly or superior? just seems to me like something a serial killer might do, collecting souvenirs from his or her kills

Sorry, comment time is over.
