High-school basketball: Chief Sealth wins state-tournament game

From Auburn: The Chief Sealth International High School boys-basketball team beats Foss HS, 68-46, to advance in the state tournament. Next game tomorrow afternoon. Video and details when our crew returns to HQ.

11:38 PM UPDATE: Sealth plays Lincoln at 3 pm tomorrow (Saturday), again at Auburn HS. More on tonight’s game after the jump:

From WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand, who covered the game in Auburn:

In the middle of the third quarter, the ball went out, the ref whistled, and the possession went to Foss. A big smile came across Keon Lewis‘s face as he looked at the ref and shrugged. He was back after spending most of last Saturday on the bench, and so was Sealth’s basic game of playing strong defense, which helped them roll up a 68-46 win over Foss of Tacoma in the first round of the state 3A boys’ basketball tournament.

Foss had trouble with shooting and rebounding the ball under their own basket for most of the first half. During the second and fourth quarters, both teams got into a run-and-gun battle that saw neither team score. Instead it was steady play like this that saw Sealth pull out a couple of scoring runs that put them up by as much as 13 points.

Foss has a young quick team led by juniors and sophomores, but it was Sealth seniors Keon Lewis with 21 points and D’Nique Harris Welch with 18 points who put away the game for the Seahawks.

Here’s the last minute of the game (to come).

Tomorrow’s game is also at Auburn High School, at 3:00 pm. Kudos to the CSIHS students who organized quite a crowd during a break to support the team.

Thanks, we are filling out the rest of the story now that your editor here is back from a few hours off the desk, while co-publisher Patrick traveled back from Auburn (when I posted this first line, the game to determine the opponent hadn’t been played yet). We’ll be at tomorrow’s game too, tweeting once again live at http://twitter.com/wsblive – TR
