West Seattle businesses: Juneau Street Market returns, sort of

Thanks to the WSB’ers who have e-mailed to ask what’s moving into the ex-Juneau Street Market space at California/Juneau (map), since the “for lease” signs have come down and shelving has appeared in the formerly empty space inside. We have just spoken to the new tenant, who says it’s going to be … the Juneau Street Market: “A grocery store with beer and wine, food service too.” (Cheeseburgers, chicken, wings, hot dogs, corn dogs, burritos, pizza, made off-premises, he elaborates.) He says this is his first store, though he has management experience, most recently a gas-station market in Redmond. Depending on how licensing goes, he’s hoping to be open within a few weeks. (If you forgot the backstory here – the previous market was closed for 8 months because of damage related to a September 2009 fire in the apartments above the store; they reopened in May 2010, but shut down less than 6 months later.)

Gosh, I hope they stock milk. This is right by my house and we would have gone to the last place a lot more if they stocked those staples that you run out of. It felt like the last owners only put about three things on the shelves so we didn’t have much of a reason to go there….

I got excited about the food until I read that it would be cooked off premises. The neighborhood was longing for something else to go into that spot, but hopefully this market will be an improvement over the other one. We all gave up trying to pick items up there because they were always old and the old owner was always open at random times. I know my husband will be happy, we don’t ever have soda at home so he likes to get his occassional can of pop there.

Could you elaborate further on the statment “made off-premises” Where in the heck is it made..in the alley? Not the choice of words I would use if I were trying to entice new customers

That is not a quote. That is my description. I guess I could have said “off-site” but “off-premises” doesn’t ring problematic to me, guess we all have our ear for words. Our conversation was brief – I was calling him out of the blue; after he listed all the food they planned to offer, I asked if it was going to be made on=site, if they were putting in a kitchen, he said no, it would be brought in and kept warm for sale. Fairly standard for convenience stores. – TR

This is near me, so I’m very glad to hear this. I like having a place I can easily walk to to get milk or whatever I need it. Good luck to the new owner.

How can anyone get excited about such junky food?
Cheeseburgers, hotdogs, pizza–brought in? C’mon, there’s so much more that should/could be made available along w/the staples of a small grocery.

I welcome the new owner of the market to our community and wish you the best of luck and a lifetime of success!

We may seem a bit smug every now and then but are really quite caring and admire your entrepreneurship.

Almost forgot about that phase of its existence. I miss the owl on the north side.

My friends used to live in the apartment above the market back in the late 90’s. Used to run downstairs for a sode or chips all the time.

Please carry fat free milk and small 1/2 and 1/2’s.

Sorry, comment time is over.
