Updates: Apartment fire atop Juneau St. Market/Ho-Win building

(cameraphone photo added 11:23 pm)
ORIGINAL 11:10 PM REPORT: We’re on our way to check out the fire in building call at California/Juneau. According to the scanner, California’s about to be closed in both directions there (map).

11:15 PM: In comments, Colleen says it’s the minimart building at the southwest corner of California/Juneau. Police are closing traffic a block north and a block south of that intersection. Update – co-publisher Patrick is there now and confirms that’s the building, lots of smoke. Photo in a moment. Raining heavily, by the way.

11:21 PM: From the scene – Fire Department is focused on the second floor and has just busted through a door. According to scanner, they’re sending a public-info officer out (which is just mostly an acknowledgment it’s a big deal and there’s media interest). There are also traffic closures on side streets, so stay FAR away from that area.

11:23 PM: Via scanner, firefighters report “tapped fire on 2nd floor” – that doesn’t mean OUT but it’s progress. Update from Patrick: They’ve also busted in through the Ho-Win next door to the mini-mart. Less smoke coming through the roof. (We’ve just added a cameraphone photo.) Scanner confirms crews had to make “forced entry” to both the store and the restaurant.

11:28 PM: Scanner confirms fire was largely centered on the building’s residential second floor, “with some extension into the attic. No word of any injuries at this point. But more engines are being called in.

11:32 PM: From the scene – the smoke has largely subsided. From the scanner – no sign of fire in the attic. Also from the scene – there’s a medic unit there but no sign that they are using it for anyone, which is a good sign of no injuries, so far.

11:39 PM UPDATE: Thanks to Evan for this photo:

They’ve just dismissed a couple of units from the scene, so this is beginning to wind down a little bit. (The rain’s subsiding too.)

11:58 PM UPDATE: Police are going to open up NORTHBOUND traffic on California through the fire scene “in about 15-20 minutes” per the scanner. Meantime, we’re still on the scene monitoring things to see if there’s any new info about how this started. We of course also will be finding out what we can about how market and restaurant operations in the building will be affected.

12:05 AM: From the incident commander at the scene: 2 people in the apartment, both OK. Officially no injuries in the fire, period. Apartment’s extensively damaged, but no word yet on fire cause.

12:34 AM: Uploading some video. This is from the wind-down phase, as one set of firefighters were up on a ladder on the north side of the building, and another team took a ladder over toward Ho-Win to set it up:

12:47 AM: This clip starts with smoke pouring from the north side of the second story, then focuses on the firefighters trying to get into Juneau Street Market:

1:00 AM: We’re not expecting to get information on the fire’s cause till later today, but will keep checking and will publish it here when that info’s available. Meantime, one more photo to share, this one from Colleen, who provided important eyewitness information via comments – just an interesting sight; note all the reflective stripes from some of the many firefighters who rushed to the scene:

Some of the firefighters from this incident had to rush right off to a call on Harbor Island – a 38-year-old man was pulled out of the water near Todd Shipyard; no official word at this hour why he was in the water (scanner talk suggests a crime investigation of some sort was under way at the scene too), but it was a big rescue callout for a while including units from this side of the bridge. (He’s on the way to the hospital right now; per the scanner, he was in the water for about 20 minutes, and seems to be OK aside from “shivering violently.”)

it’s the building with the mini mart right at the corner next door to the how win. I live one building down.

  • WSB September 5, 2009 (11:14 pm)

Thanks. The scanner is almost unusable because there’s too much other traffic from other events including post-football in the north end.

I’ve been hearing police and fire sirens go down California for over five minutes in a constant stream. Must be major.

  • Brian September 5, 2009 (11:16 pm)

Lots of sirens. Anyone know how many trucks were called in?

  • Alex September 5, 2009 (11:17 pm)

If you have a trunking scanner its on talk group 1648.

  • Lisa September 5, 2009 (11:18 pm)

West Seattle Blog rocks. I live on California, am wondering what all the sirens are, and was able to quickly go online and find this. Hope all turns out ok.

  • JanS September 5, 2009 (11:20 pm)

there are apartments above that store, aren’t there?…hope everyone is OK :(

    It’s 11:20 and I’m still hearing sirens..

  • MargL September 5, 2009 (11:25 pm)

Gah – hope Patrick took his waders! It’s starting to rain buckets.

  • Dan September 5, 2009 (11:30 pm)

I’m listening to the police scanner at http://www.komonews.com/news/content/scanner/31214074.html?video=pop&t=a
    Never done this before…kinda interesting!

  • natinstl September 5, 2009 (11:32 pm)

I live down the street and just walked up there to check it out. It looks like it’s out, they’re inside looking around with flashlights. There’s some residual smoke, but you can’t smell anything burning.

  • Colleen September 5, 2009 (11:32 pm)

It is that one apartment above the mini mart. I think it might have been right before 11 when my lights started to flicker in the bathroom and living room–one of the neighbors said he saw a transformer spark too.

There’s about 3 or 4 trucks right now. Funny thing is right after I went out to see if it was my building or not I came back in to get the number to contact WSB but this was posted.

  • WSB September 5, 2009 (11:33 pm)

Thanks again, Colleen. It was very unusual that the dispatch was to “California/Juneau” rather than a specific address – unless it’s a car accident in the middle of the street, the dispatch is invariably eventually to a specific address. So that’s why we couldn’t tell what building it was till your note, which came about one minute before Patrick arrived (we are a little more than a mile straight-line south) … TR

  • Dave September 5, 2009 (11:33 pm)

Watched them bust the door down to the apartment on the second floor – flames were pouring out of the [kitchen?] window. No signs of people inside, thankfully.

  • Dave September 5, 2009 (11:36 pm)

By the way, had the same experience as Colleen – watching TV and lights were flickering. Came out to see the transformer [?] in the alley on fire – then found the more significant fire.

  • Cryslou September 6, 2009 (12:08 am)

I can’t believe how many firetrucks were out there. The firemen cut out some of the roof out of the apartment, where two very nice men live.

  • Jose September 6, 2009 (12:09 am)

I hope no one is hurt…two more local businesses are impacted, though.

  • Colleen September 6, 2009 (12:13 am)

The Seattle City light truck is out working on the transformer behind the building right now. I know it was sparking at one point right when the lights were flickering–have no idea if it’s the same.

  • Z September 6, 2009 (12:25 am)

Lets hope this will be repaired in a timely fashion. Lets just say that it took MONTHS to paint out some graffitti on the market wall…

  • WSB September 6, 2009 (12:34 am)

Cryslou, when it’s a building – big or small – there are rules regarding how many units HAVE TO be sent – basically send out lots and lots of help – better to have them all rolling and send some back, than to send too few and have to call for more when every minute can be life-death … TR

  • Cryslou September 6, 2009 (12:46 am)

The bus dropped us off at around 11pm right in front of Juneau Street Market. We walked home – about 50 yards away, I let my dogs out and smelled fire….the next thing I know we were swarmed with firetrucks. These men and women have very scary and important jobs and I don’t thank them enough. I’m so proud of our Seattle Firemen! Thanks for coming out today and stopping the fire before it spread to any other homes!

  • Leroniusmonkfish September 6, 2009 (12:59 am)

I watched my house burn down due to a chimney fire back in 91 and got out but in turn had a company named Service Master (yellow vans) steal most of what survived. Unfortunately what the fire doesn’t destroy the water will. Hope everyone is o.k. and had insurance…I remember telling friends that it was so easy moving after the fire cus everything I owned fit in the passenger side of my VW…

  • Z September 6, 2009 (8:55 am)

I overheard the tenants saying they have renters insurance. Some of their stuff is now laying outside on the ground.

  • Cryslou September 6, 2009 (10:19 am)

@Z, I hope you’re right about them having renter’s insurance. They are very nice guys. It has encouraged me to look into it this week!

  • Jamie September 6, 2009 (10:28 am)

My son and I who is two live about 4 blocks from where this happend. I was helping him brush his teeth when he heard the sirens and got excited about it! Then…Here came one more then one more then 2 at a time. So! I put on his rain boots a coat and off we went to whatch the heros at work!!(He’s a little thrill seeker) Mind you when he was whatching the trucks go by he was standing in his fire truck bed! =) When we finally got there everything was calmed down thank goodness. But then a again it took us a little while to get there because he wanted to splash in every puddle he saw =) When we DID get there we counted 10-12 fire trucks!!! Thanks for your GREAT work guys!!and gals!!!!

The building better known as the “50-50” (or what my friend’s dad called it the 60-40 food mart!)must be well over 55+ years old. I sure hope that it can be saved.

There are a lot of wonderful memories in that old place. Spending my milk &/or lunch $ on penny candy! School milk was 5 cents and lunch was 30cents. Can you imagine?

Art & Lorette and than Chuck and his wife made it a wonderful local store for all of us. Hope it makes it and am very happy to hear the residents made it out “okay”.

  • WSB September 6, 2009 (12:40 pm)

SFD’s media rep Helen is checking for us right now on whether the official cause has been determined – we talked to one of the tenants down there this morning while checking to see if any info was posted on the store doors – will post our followup soon .. TR

  • Cheryl September 6, 2009 (1:09 pm)

Wow. My daughter’s Spanish school is on the NW side of that same corner. We run into the little market, mail letters from the post box on the sidewalk, etc. all the time! I always admired how spacious and light filled the above apartments were. I hope the occupants are all okay, though I’m sorry for the fire damage and loss, for the business owners below as well.

    Great reporting as always WSB.

  • Mike September 6, 2009 (3:27 pm)

I live at 5911 2 buildings down and when i saw the power going in and out i just called 911 about the transformer blowing up in the alley side of the building. … i didnt know the market was on fire… just glad there was no people hurt.

  • LabourDayWknd September 6, 2009 (3:52 pm)

The tenants are both safe – they had no pets, besides some fish which survived. The tenants were not home when the fire broke out, but were called by friends to rush back. They DO have renters insurance and CANNOT recommend more strongly the importance of having it. Especially when it’s SO affordable. If you aren’t insured, please consider it for your peace of mind – and hopefully never have to use it. There is extensive smoke and water damage throughout the whole of the unit, and crews are working on securing the premises.

  • SarahScoot September 6, 2009 (6:17 pm)

Ditto above – renters’ insurance is cheapcheapcheap. Seriously, I believe we spent less than $100 a year for it, including coverage on my jewelry. I’ve never had to use it, but it’s inexpensive peace of mind.

  • Restita September 9, 2009 (10:52 am)

Whew, I’m so glad all the tenants are alright. I’m in the martial arts school right across Juneau, and my clients absolutely love the market and Ho-Win. I’ve never met the upstairs tenants, but I wish them well and thank goodness everyone is safe!! I just want to let Ho-Win, 50/50, and the upstairs tenants know, if they need any help with anything….moving stuff, cleaning, etc….just knock on Seattle Wushu’s door or email us and we’ll get a crew together to help with anything!

  • Juneau guy's September 9, 2009 (12:48 pm)

Thank you for everybody support. Just when things were looking bright for us this happens… But were glad nobody was hurt. We will be opening in 6-8 weeks! Thanks Juneau’s guyz

  • jiggers September 11, 2009 (4:02 pm)

Funny here. A lot of posters were ragging how bad the chinese food was.

  • WSB September 11, 2009 (4:06 pm)

Which reminds me, we couldn’t stop at the time, but the Ho-Win appears to have reopened. Gotta check on the market again.

  • Z September 14, 2009 (8:24 am)

Ho-Win is open. Market’s doors are boarded up. Hope all of their hookahs weren’t ruined in the fire. What will they sell?

  • WushuGrrl September 22, 2009 (1:15 pm)

I’m right across the way from the Juneau market, and heard from the people at Ho-Win, that the Juneau market will not open for another month or two. The fire (moreso the putting out of the fire) damaged their electrical wiring apparently, and will need to be fixed. I saw them moving everything out a week ago. Sad though, that taggers have put their graffiti on the yellow painted part of the wall at the market.

  • WSB September 22, 2009 (1:17 pm)

Wushu – I JUST drove by there today and noticed the repairs were still under way. We will try to reach them for a followup soon. Thanks for the update. Even a “small” fire can be so damaging – TR

Sorry, comment time is over.
