West Seattle Weather Watch: Lightning-fast, ferocious storm

ORIGINAL 12:31 AM REPORT: Both for those who are awake, and for those sleeping through this who might wonder in the morning “what happened?” – after several bouts of thunder, there’s a massive downpour and strong wind right now. And power flickers.

12:43 AM: 911 log says there’s a transformer fire at 26th/Juneau in North Delridge. Meantime, just added video we got by stepping out the door- under the eaves, sheltered by a big shrub – during that huge rain/wind gust. You can only see a peek of it through the shrub but at least we captured a bit of what it was like, for those who somehow slept through it. The National Weather Service has a “short-term forecast” alert about this – apparently will NOT be an encore:

A STRONG LINE OF SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL PRODUCE BRIEF SOUTHWEST WIND GUSTS TO 55 MPH AS IT PASSES. AT 1130 THE LINE EXTENDED FROM WEST OF PORT ANGELES TO WEST OF SHELTON THEN DOWN ONTO THE NORTHWEST OREGON COAST. THE LINE IS MOVING EAST AROUND 65 MPH AND WILL MOVE RAPIDLY INTO THE CASCADES BY 1245 AM.

12:58 AM: Added that photo, taken by Mike Heavey from Alki, and shared via Twitter. Our power’s still flickering. One commenter says there’s an outage near Westwood Village. 911 log shows a transformer fire at 26th/Juneau in North Delridge. Via Twitter, we’re also told of a Harbor Avenue outage. The City Light outage tracker hasn’t caught up to those yet – it’s showing more than 6,000 without power from White Center southward, nothing up here yet.

1:31 AM UPDATE: No major reports of trouble – although if the Big Burst brought down any more trees/mud, we may not hear about it for a few hours. The transformer-fire call at 26th/Juneau is closed.

6:57 AM: City Light shows no major outages left in West Seattle right now – though more than 700 are out in other areas of the city. No reports of any new road trouble; Christopher Boffoli drove around potential trouble spots and major local roads after things calmed down a bit overnight and didn’t see anything likely to get in the way of drivers.

Didn’t figure out what the thunder was until about the second or third rumble. It has been a long time since I’ve heard it here. Power flickering up here near the Junction too. Just took a gander at the weather radar and it looks like there is a very strong squall line rolling through.

  • Tim December 14, 2010 (12:34 am)

It’s like a midwest storm. Incredible!

  • Stacy December 14, 2010 (12:34 am)

We are all up. That was crazy!

    • WSB December 14, 2010 (12:42 am)

Transformer fire at 26th/Juneau, says the 911 log.

  • Bunnyfer December 14, 2010 (12:34 am)

Yeah, this was a little surprising. Nothing like realizing I should be in bed, then being too excited to sleep because I’m watching The Show! :)

  • Tim December 14, 2010 (12:34 am)

Wow, this is insane weather. A little on the frightening side…

  • toddinwestwood December 14, 2010 (12:35 am)

wow. the sheer volume of rain and wind on such a short time. It woke me up. Streetlights on Roxbury are out, but we still have power.

  • Alex December 14, 2010 (12:36 am)

    That was AWESOME!

  • Scott taylor December 14, 2010 (12:36 am)

Lights running along Alki were down but just popped back up.

  • transplantella December 14, 2010 (12:36 am)

We had 4 strikes of distant thunder, then the wind blew up off the sound sideways, then 95% (95%?) of the lights in the neighborhood went off.

We got lucky. Our power is on….now.

    Kenney neighborhood.

  • Carol December 14, 2010 (12:37 am)

I second all those comments. It is just like a Midwest storm; one that used to make me jump into bed w/my gramma! :)

  • Wallflower December 14, 2010 (12:38 am)

Wow!!! Hailing in Morgan Junction, power flickers, this is SUPER crazy. No doubt there’s trees down…

  • kate December 14, 2010 (12:39 am)

I’ve been through lots of scary weather in the Midwest, but the sound of the wind that just came through has my heart pounding hard! Scary….

  • Donald December 14, 2010 (12:41 am)

All of the above down here in Highland Park. And now, lots of sirens.

  • george December 14, 2010 (12:41 am)

With as saturated as the ground it, here’s hoping more trees dont’ fall or slide…

  • Rachel December 14, 2010 (12:41 am)

It’s 12:40 and the worst just passed. Unfortunately I also hear sirens going by, south on 35th I think, near Thistle.

  • dq December 14, 2010 (12:41 am)

the weather is crazy and i think it’s awesome that we all came right to the WSB

  • Rachel December 14, 2010 (12:43 am)

I wondered why I was awake, then heard the wind and rain. Now having a midnight snack and wondering if it’ll continue!

  • M December 14, 2010 (12:43 am)

Very hard rain and wind in Gatewood. Lights were flickering then off for about 5 seconds before staying on. Loudest storm I’ve heard in a long time.

  • DK December 14, 2010 (12:44 am)

Hail & super-windy near Fauntleroy Ferry — sounds like a freight train out there.

  • Betsy December 14, 2010 (12:44 am)

All the transformers on 26th sw south of juneau just blew up. Power went back on, though.

  • bhp December 14, 2010 (12:46 am)

Whats with the fire and explosion off of what looks like Delridge. I’ve been watching it for the last ten minutes. Looks like an electrical fire.

  • Genessee neighbor December 14, 2010 (12:46 am)

Woke up to my burglar alarm going off! That gets the heart going. All deadbolts still locked. Apparently a one of the gusts of wind was enough to jiggle our deck door and set off the alarm. Haven’t had that happen in the 20 years we’ve had an alarm system!

  • alicia December 14, 2010 (12:48 am)

Power is off in westwood village area -30th and Trenton

  • alki neighbor December 14, 2010 (12:49 am)

an elevater dropped just a few minutes ago… CRAZY NITE!!

  • Rachel December 14, 2010 (12:49 am)

I hadn’t seen the 911 log before, thanks. (New here.) Unfortunately it also shows an aid call a few blocks from here – much closer than the transformer fire.

  • lou December 14, 2010 (12:50 am)

    I want more…that was cool.

  • Katie December 14, 2010 (12:50 am)

This storm is scary! So thankful for westseattleblog. I don’t feel so alone now.

  • Betsy December 14, 2010 (12:50 am)

Emergency vehicles are out on 26th, hard ti tell what cross street. Whew, what a night.

  • Bunnyfer December 14, 2010 (12:50 am)

This surely cannot bode well for hill stability – I hope everyone is okay come morning!

  • Anna December 14, 2010 (12:51 am)

Really loud rain and thunder, then the sound of transformers blowing (we live near 21st and Juneau)! Woke the whole house up.

  • Geno December 14, 2010 (12:52 am)

    That was nuts!!

  • AmyLouWho December 14, 2010 (12:52 am)

I thought it was a tornado blowing through, especially with the roaring sound. Unfortunately I had to go out and rescue my garbage can and saw a very frightened dark haired german shepherd-looking dog running by.

  • bhp December 14, 2010 (12:52 am)

Man! that was a pretty cool explosion! the whole sky lit up! sorry for the people who have lost power.

  • Babs December 14, 2010 (12:54 am)

I thought my windows were going to break and shower me with glass from the fury of rain and wind hitting them from what seemed to be totally from a sideways direction. Scared me to hide under the covers. Then I heard sirens. This is a recent repeating pattern Ms Mother Nature. What have we Puget Sounders done to make you so angry toward us :)

  • Andros December 14, 2010 (12:55 am)

And that was a rolling storm!

  • Noelle December 14, 2010 (12:57 am)

This winter is insane and it has not even Really started yet! The 1st day of Winter is not until December 21st!

  • Luke December 14, 2010 (12:58 am)

As a local west coaster, never heard or seen that before….

  • Beth December 14, 2010 (12:58 am)

Wow, that was fun…and as always WSB rocks!!!

  • km December 14, 2010 (12:59 am)

Did anyone else catch the multiple explosions in west seattle?? Must have been the transformer that was reported… Two bright blue explosions followed by a ball of fire!! Crazy… I caught it on video in the distance.

  • bhp December 14, 2010 (1:01 am)

WOW! I’m up on the 3800 block of 35th and could see the transformer blow! and the power go out… :( Was that just one transformer?

  • Mookie December 14, 2010 (1:03 am)

Saw it approach with lightning making the clouds glow to the south/southwest. As the thunder came faster after the lightning, the action swung along due west and really lit up the sky in a low horizontal bands. When that rain and sideways wind arrived, wow! I moved away from the living room windows thinking they actually could break (very old single-pane south and west picture windows).

Scary but thrilling gust of nature outta nowhere. Hope those who lost electricity get it back very quickly!

  • Wallflower December 14, 2010 (1:04 am)

I really thought a tornado just hit the house.

  • Megan December 14, 2010 (1:05 am)

We had the power out across the street (Fauntleroy/Dawson/Brandon area), but it came back on after 2-3 minutes. There was what looked like a little brown-out activity, but all seems to have settled down now and gone back to normal. Some folks in the area may find they are late to work tomorrow…

  • Jeff December 14, 2010 (1:09 am)

South lake union power is on but all Comcast services down. Sounds like you guys got it worse.

  • Kevin December 14, 2010 (1:23 am)

A few electrical flickers in Arbor Heights. Still quite breezy out.

  • Rebecca December 14, 2010 (1:31 am)

Our neighborhood is power outage too by greenlake !! Crazy storm!!!

  • Kinney December 14, 2010 (1:33 am)

Thought it was just me and then my daughter woke as well. Watched the whole thing down here in Renton. Long time since I’ve seen it this heavy.

  • alicia December 14, 2010 (2:03 am)

Power still out for us – neighbors across the street DO have power…..

  • Kal December 14, 2010 (2:15 am)

Power just went out at Trenton and 35th. Why now?

  • Paige December 14, 2010 (2:23 am)

Power out at Delridge at Holden.

    • WSB December 14, 2010 (2:28 am)

K – still gusty winds at times, so maybe that’s it.

  • Kat December 14, 2010 (3:11 am)

We live on the Sound in the Federal Way area and the blue light flash was as if it was in our backyard.

  • Sonoma December 14, 2010 (3:59 am)

Rain lashing against the windows, lightning bolts flashing on the horizon, wind screaming through the trees. It was like a cheesy horror movie or bodice-ripper paperback. Our power was out for two hours. But do I really want to buy a big, hulking generator for the next go-round?

  • bsmomma December 14, 2010 (8:11 am)

The storm was awesome…….until I had to wake up at 5am. :) None the less, glad there was no major damage! That was some serious thunder and an out of no where full on DOWN POUR! OK, off to get some more coffee!

  • miws December 14, 2010 (8:19 am)

I slept through all of the excitement, down on the Thriftway block of California!

    .

I have a small, tabletop fan on my headboard for air circulation, and white noise. Plus, I have a large air cleaning machine in the living room. So, having the bedroom door open, and that white noise, blocks out a lot of outside noise.

    .

I’m in bed by 10:00 most nights, but stay up until at least 11:00 on Mondays, since I watch the new Hawai’i 5-0. Actually stayed up until around 11:40 last night, read for about twenty minutes, so apparently the storm started shortly after I dropped off to sleep.

    .

Got up around 4:00, to use the facilities, and heard the alarm on the battery back-up for my computer going off. So, figured we’d had a power flicker, as all it takes to set that thing off is a flicker that’s barely noticeable. Fired up the ‘puter, logged on to WSB, and the storm related story I was expecting to see was there!

    .

Feel very fortunate though. Haven’t had a significant power outage on this block for quite some time. *Knocks on head wood* After the big storm of four years ago(?!?!?), it seemed like any wind event after that resulted in the Morgan Junction are being hit with an outage of at least an hour, while many other areas went unscathed, and it seemed like a block or two radius around my block was the last to be restored, from what I could see out my windows, and would see reported on WSB when I’d check after the power came back on.

    .

    Mike

I love reading the weather comments on here. Having moved hear after five years in Cape Cod I slept through the whole thing. What Storm?

  • ddd December 14, 2010 (9:11 am)

Might be fixed by now, but earlier (~8:30AM Tues) when I drove through the intersection at Roxbury/4th/Olsen (three-way intersection just before Roxbury drops down to 509) the traffic signals were out.

  • bhp December 14, 2010 (10:07 am)

KM, could you post the video of the transformer fire?

  • velo_nut December 14, 2010 (10:12 am)

Dog was so scared she tore her bed open and hid inside. Wowza that was an awesome storm!

Sorry, comment time is over.
