West Seattle Pharmacy closes: ‘The stars just weren’t aligned’

After multiple notes in the past few hours saying a “For Lease” sign had been spotted at the West Seattle Pharmacy site – where a coffee stand had opened while the pharmacy license was awaited – we called proprietor Kenny Wolfe to ask what happened. He tells WSB it just didn’t work out because of a combination of circumstances mostly centering on federal (Drug Enforcement Administration) licensing taking too long – four months longer than expected. “The stars just weren’t aligned,” he tells WSB, which means he’s going back to working as a pharmacist “for someone else, instead of myself.” So now the storefront at California/Brandon (across from West Seattle Nursery) — where Westside Pharmacy closed more than a year ago, after its longtime proprietor moved his business into the then-new Junction QFC — needs a new tenant, and contact info should be posted at the storefront by tomorrow.

The FDA needs an overhaul. I had been looking forward to this store opening.

West Seattle needs an adult book store. A neighborhood like this would be perfect.

How about a Fix-It shop? It’s such a shame to throw out little appliances and lamps and gadgets, older TVs, tape players etc. etc. I’d rather spend my local dollars on a local business, re-cycle things, than be forced to buy all the stuff new. Another idea,(that space is too small), but I always wished that West Seattle had a Sizzler Restaurant…lots of choices and a big salad bar.

What that corner needs is a great breakfast/lunch spot. Organic pancakes and such and just a kick ass lunch menu!!!

Sizzler is SO meant for WS . . . as is Walmart

How about West Seattle’s first Vegan resturant?

  • grr November 1, 2010 (7:12 pm)

how bout a vegetarian Hooters? :)

Great place for a 24-hour coffee shop. We need *something* that stays open for night owls in WS, that isn’t a bar or a grocery store.

    I agree with Peter. I miss Spanky’s…
WSB, BTW, what is up with old Spanky’s spot? It has been a while … ;-)

Nothing new that I know of. The “what’s up with …” list is particularly long right now but we’re watching multiple sites! In some cases it appears the owners are just holding on hoping the economy will get better … so they can get a new tenant, redevelop, whatever …

I have said it in the past if someone wants to loan me the money I will gladly open a 24 hour diner. And we do need one bad, but that space is not right. The old west seattle motors spot is perfect because it has parking. I recall the rent on this space is not cheap either.

    How about another Trader Joe’s?!?

I am very sorry that the government, in this time, as they scream they are for jobs, has dithered and diddled while this man’s life ticked by.
    All for red tape.
Pieces of paper issued by one bureaucrat to another. while
    the citizen sits and waits.
    Thanks Gov’t.
    For nothing.

let’s face it..the only thing that works in this town is coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

We own this building and I can assure you an Adult Book Store will not go in here as posted above.

  • PastyPete November 2, 2010 (1:03 pm)

The fact of the matter is that this is another vacant building in West Seattle that at one time had a business in it. Drive down any commercial street in West Seattle and you’ll see space after space for lease. And no business there means no one is employed there. No businesses, no jobs.

We need real leadership in district 8, someone with front line regulatory experience that can help cut red tape, allow business growth, and help create jobs in West Seattle and the surrounding areas.

I voted for Diana Toledo, you should also. If you haven’t filled out your ballot, please do so and get it to the post office before closing tonight.

We can’t afford to put someone like her opponent on the council. His business rating from votesmart.org is 17/100. Please, PLEASE, for the sake of our community, choose Diana Toledo and get your ballot in today.

    Pete,

You make me want to go down and grab my ballot and scratch Dianas’s name off…….

    Aw, bummer!

It would definitely be nice to have a little cafe/sandwich type of place across from the nursery.

  • Peter November 2, 2010 (5:21 pm)

Ok, no adult book store. How about a little cafe/bistro/russian-poker-cardroom? Yummy treats and tasty coffee in front; high-stakes, potentially violent, gambling in back. Again, this neighborhood could use something like this: A Den of Iniquity!

  • Sizzler! November 2, 2010 (5:45 pm)

    Carson,

    I agree!

  • alki_2008 November 3, 2010 (12:45 pm)

Anyone know how much the lease was/is on this space?

Sorry, comment time is over.
