Fundraiser funnyman: Pat Cashman @ SW Youth & Family Services

Some people just walk into a place and take right over. That’s Seattle funnyman Pat Cashman making himself comfortable in Southwest Youth and Family Services executive director Steve Daschle‘s office this morning. Daschle wasn’t around but truth is, SWYFS really didn’t mind Cashman getting comfortable – he’s the guy who’s going to keep things lively during their biggest fundraiser of the year, the XAFLAD! (Somali for “party”) auction/entertainment gala coming up September 24th (a week from Friday) at the Columbia Tower Club downtown. He was at SWYFS HQ in North Delridge this morning for a briefing – even as volunteers like Nancy continued to toil on the auction items – some of which have been grouped into theme baskets (this one’s easy to figure out):

SWYFS has more than 150 donated items going up for live and silent auction, according to Nanette Westerman, who along with Shayla Simoes stopped to chat while Cashman and SWYFS’s Cara Kroenke strategized for the big night. Most are in storage, awaiting the auction…

…but some items just aren’t shelf material, like a stay in Barcelona, Spain, or two tickets to a fancy dinner and show, and even a sneak peek inside the fabled women’s restroom atop the Columbia Tower (yes, females can go inside for free – but the successful bidder will get a tour even with XY chromosomes, Westerman says). Whatever the auction brings in, SWYFS is going to need it, she notes – she says she’s already getting phone calls inquiring what kind of help the agency will be offering at Christmastime: “Things are fairly dire out there.” (SWYFS wears many hats – public-school classes on site, violence-prevention programs, family-assistance programs, and more – and has a service area that also stretches outside West Seattle.) A few $60 tickets to XAFLAD! are left, and you can buy them online here.

Pat Cashman funny? I don’t think so

“Funny” is about as subjective as “who’s got the best pizza” and other eternal questions. Personally, we were always particularly amused by “DJ Waiter” and “DJ Pilot” from his “Almost Live” work. – TR

Cashman is funny. For those that grew up watching Almost Live, he’s great. His son is damn funny too, had a great skit at WSU with Ryan Leaf as the character he’d pick on. Loved it.

Some people just don’t get Pat’s style of humor. I guess I can understand that. Hell, I think even some of my friends don’t quite get his humor, but also don’t/didn’t seem to “get it” when I have epxressed a similar style of humor, even long before I became a fan of Pat, which is at least 18 years ago now. That being said, they understand and appreciate that I’m a fan of him.

So, maybe he’s not everybody’s cup of tea humor wise, but that humor, and the fact that he is genuinely a kind, humble person, has earned him a loyal fan base, and a bunch of us fans have become very close friends, and at least two marriages have resulted from those fans coming together.

    Oh, and tomorrow’s his Birthday.

    Happy Birthday, Pat!

I am really excited about Xaflad. Southwest is a great non-profit for incorporating the ethnicities in the neighborhood. It is a way to show that they really care about their clients and their agencies future.

And Pat is the PERFECT host!

Pat’s an all around mensch, to use the Jewnacular. That means, in Yiddish, he’s a good person. Funny person too. If you are looking for raunchy stuff, then go elsewhere, for that isn’t Cashman’s style. Miss him on the radio, for there is sadly, not many of his type on the air. But if he can do good not being on air, then hooray for him! ( and Happy Birthday as well!)

I love this agency. They do a LOT to make our community safer. And sorry, but if you don’t think Pat Cashman is funny; you don’t have a sense of humor – AT ALL! Happy Birthday,Pat.

Sorry, comment time is over.
