West Seattle weather: Small slide on Marine View Drive

Thanks to those readers who called and texted about a small slide on the 9800 block of Marine View Drive. We responded quickly but SDOT already had the debris cleared to the side of the road by the time we arrived. It appeared to be more brush than mud. No damage was reported.

The rain seems to have let up a bit for now. But there’s more predicted throughout the rest of the day. We did find some slick streets around West Seattle this morning, as the rain has picked up some oil from the roadway. So do drive carefully.

Thanks to photographer Steve Shelton for his photo of the debris removal:

    Was that really a ‘slide’?
Or, was it just someone dumping yard waste on the road?
From the photos, it not only looks puny, but I can’t see anyplace for stuff to slide from.

I thought it was odd, too, old timer. I drive on that street every day, and yesterday and today I slowed way down and tried to figure out where it could have slid from and I have NO idea. It looks more to me like someone dumped their load of yard waste..hopefully on accident.

Steve Shelton, who shared the picture above, indicated in a post for the WS Herald that it might have been the DOT crews cutting down the shrubbery. They might not have cleaned up the debris, just pushed it in to the drainage ditch.

I guess it’s lucky for the City this didn’t result in a flooded basement!

Another interesting story killed by the facts.

For the record, Steve Shelton e-mailed us the same copy claiming SDOT might be to blame. Our photojournalist had already been to the scene half an hour earlier; I don’t know whether the other news organization went to cover it themselves, or just posted what they received. “Slide” is how it was dispatched – that was directly from authorities. Absent verification from SDOT of the claim that debris were to blame, what our crew saw and reported is exactly what’s in our copy above – Tracy
