Update: Garage burns in 5400 block of 23rd SW, no injuries

(Added top photo 6:47 am, sent from Belvidere by anonymous contributor; photo below was added at 6:27 am – Wendy Hughes-Jelen photographed the smoke from High Point)

6:15 AM: On our way to the house fire call in the 5400 block of 23rd SW. If you’re hearing/seeing choppers, it’s TV. This is just east of Delridge, near/at the intersection with Brandon (map). 6:21 AM: Fire is “knocked down” per scanner – but the smoke could be seen from quite some distance, according to some of the people who’ve called (thanks!). 6:30 AM: “A large garage with vehicles inside” is what burned, according to SFD’s Helen Fitzpatrick, who says nobody was hurt – everybody got out of the adjacent house OK. 6:36 AM: Here’s what’s left of the garage, which is behind the house:

In case you wondered – this is NOT affecting traffic on Delridge, which is open and running just fine. 23rd is blocked, but it’s not a major through street at that point anyway. One wall of the garage is still smoldering. 7:02 AM: The media briefing at the scene (we’ll add that video when it’s back at HQ) has mostly reiterated what we’ve already reported – nobody home; contents of garage a loss (but exactly what was in there is still being sorted out). The family who lives there was home at the time and called in the fire. Investigators are working to find out how it started.

7:58 AM: The above video clip is Battalion Chief Jay Hagen, who spoke to media at the scene. Here’s also a short clip of firefighters still hosing off the smoldering garage:

11:25 AM UPDATE: No word yet on the fire’s cause.

You can see the smoke over that way from Schmitz Elementary and a fire command SUV went flying past Metropolitan Market at about 6AM

Saw this on our walk a few minutes before 6. Called 911 right away, but it took firefighters more than 10 minutes to get there. Sad, considering there are 2 fire stations within a 2 mile radius! Glad to say the fine men on the #11 engine were the first to show up.

2 copters and a plane have been hovering for about 10 minutes now- impressive response time

I hope that everybody in the house is okay. And I hope that this meets our TV helicopter quota for a while. Between the marina fire on Tuesday and this fire today, we’ve had two noisy mornings in less than a week.

I looked out my window near Sylvan Ridge and saw the rising smoke.

  • toddinwestwood August 26, 2010 (6:32 am)

I could see it from 2nd and Lucile in Georgetown. You can smell it now.

Starting at about 6am Delridge had what seemed like an endless brigade of fire vehicles rushing past sirens blaring. Soon to be followed by noise of two helicopters basically hovering right overhead. All that noise woke me and I stumble out to see a big black column of smoke rising up from a house about 3 blocks away. With in about 20min. the seemed to be out for the most part and the smoke was dissipating. Good job SFD.

I couldn’t see any smoke but I did hear the copter(s?). Guess it’s time to get up for the day:-)

Strange – heard only one siren, now it seems that there are quite a number of helicopters out above High Point. Oh, now they are back… still half asleep but going to check it out regardless…. 10 mins later, i live right near the High Point overlook. Helicopters are making a RACKET but only saw two, they seem to be hovering in this area though… as if something is still going on. Weird way to wake up.

Glad no on hurt. Very loud copters over us for a while this am. Was this the auto repair place? Can’t remember if that’s farther south.

OMG with the helicopters! Seriously, two helicopters for 30 minutes for a GARAGE fire! I guess I should count my blessing that this constitutes news. ARGH!

    • WSB August 26, 2010 (6:56 am)

It would have been three helicopters except I suspect that the third has theirs in the shop or their pilot on vacation because they would definitely be doing aerials and so far they haven’t had any. The chopper-equipped TV stations are usually flying during the morning news hours anyway so anything like this will generally get a fast response unless they happen to be outside the metro area when the incident breaks out – TR

There was a brutal home invasion robbery on 4th Ave SW early this morning. Some of the sirens may have been heading there.

    • WSB August 26, 2010 (7:18 am)

I’ve just published that story, Gina. It happened at 3 am and was reported at 3:30 so there would’ve been no sirens anywhere near the time of this fire.

    That top image is stunning.

I know that this is way off topic, but is there really a Hollywood Video at 25th and Brandon as the map in the above article indicates?

  • k2 August 26, 2010 (10:14 am)

no there is not a hollywood video.

    thankfully no-one was injured…

is a helicopter at 6am REALLY necessary?

  • Vanessa August 26, 2010 (11:41 am)

Wendy, what a dramatic photo you caught!!!!

  • concernedneighbor August 26, 2010 (12:56 pm)

What an event filled day and it’s only just a little past noon.

  • flowerpetal August 26, 2010 (1:47 pm)

Thanks. It is on the map as being there but I could not imagine it placed there. And, the Hollywood Video store locator says there is one there too. Probably an old error as there was/is? one several blocks south as the crow flies. Thanks k2

Putting in a plug for good old human-powered websites, we’re not perfect but that’s why we ask for info via e-mail and other means that actually are received and reviewed by a human, instead of, say, an “upload tool” – It means that if something is wrong, it’s generally caught. Having direct access to a Google Map may be great in one way, but if something is put in erroneously – or if a business that’s mapped closes – no one may ever fix it, because it’s not being watched by a human … You can report an error, I’m sure, but I wonder what kind of staff they have to deal with that! – TR

According to the 911 logs the units were assigned at 6:00:58 and E11 arrived at 6:05:06, hardly the 10 minutes as mentioned above. That’s just over 4 min from notice to arrival. Good job E11.

Sorry, comment time is over.
