Centennial-celebrating West Seattle Library to close for roof work

This Saturday, the 100-year-old West Seattle (Admiral) Branch of the Seattle Public Library celebrates its centennial, and you’re invited – 1 to 3 pm. But then a few weeks later, starting in mid-August, it’ll close for roof work – SPL HQ just announced the timetable – read on for details:

Here’s the official announcement from SPL.

The Seattle Public Library’s West Seattle Branch, 2306 42nd Ave. S.W., (206-684-7444) and book drop will close at 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15, so a partial re-roofing project can be completed. The branch and book drop are scheduled to reopen at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11.

The roof’s waterproofing membrane on the 9,500-square-foot historic Carnegie branch will be replaced by Centennial Contractors. The membrane roofing was last replaced in the 1980s and portions have begun to fail and leak. Existing slate shingles will be removed as necessary for the project and will be reused as much as possible. Funding for the $250,000 roof repair comes from the Library’s capital budget, which pays for major capital maintenance projects.

Two Summer Reading Program events will still take place at the branch during the re-roofing project: “Sound Waves” at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, and “She Sings Sea Songs” at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 21. Attendees must use the back entrance located in the alley behind the branch.

Users may choose any other Library location as a pickup location for items placed on hold, interlibrary loan requests or purchase suggestions. Patrons may return Library materials to any branch. If West Seattle Branch customers don’t select an alternate branch, their holds will be sent to the Southwest Branch, 9010 35th Ave. S.W., (206-684-7455).

Other nearby branches include: Delridge Branch, 5423 Delridge Way S.W., (206-733-9125), High Point Branch, 3411 S.W. Raymond St., (206-684-7454), South Park Branch, 8604 Eighth Ave. S., (206-615-1688), Rainier Beach Branch, 9125 Rainier Ave. S., (206-386-1906), Beacon Hill Branch, 2821 Beacon Ave. S., (206-684-4711), International District/Chinatown Branch, 713 Eighth Ave. S., (206-386-1300), Columbia Branch, 4721 Rainier Ave. S., (206-386-1908).

what if we aren’t able to make it to another library to return materials? Will we be assessed fines?

Yes, overdue fines will be assessed as usual so please plan ahead to return books to another Library location. You can find a list of all Library locations here: http://www.spl.org/default.asp?pageID=branch
