West Seattle Whale Watch: Another orca sighting

The fabulous folks at Orca Network had passed along news of a few orcas spotted off Carkeek Park in North Seattle earlier today – and now we’ve just heard from Vanessa at Alki that it looks like they’re off Alki Point/Lighthouse as of a few minutes ago, “heading toward the islands.” Let us know if you see them!

I just missed them being near the beach but could see their backs from a distance. “A mother and a young one”, I’ve been told by another smiling guy.

We have a bit of a puzzler. There were at least two orcas off Carkeek Park until 2:15-2:30 today, and the sighting off Alki by Vanessa before 2:39. If they were the same orcas they would have to have gone about 7-8 miles in less than half an hour. That’s maybe possible, but not likely, especially if they zig-zagged like transients tend to do. Chalk it up to another whale mystery.

Interestingly we also had a Facebook report of a possible young gray seen in Elliott Bay in the same vicinity – “off Cactus” per followup exchanges – I recall from one of the Orca Network communiques that there was a report of such a whale in the Carkeek vicinities. We’ll see what/who tomorrow brings … TR

We saw a young gray whale about 100 yards from the beach at Carkeek Park today. Lots of folks there saw it too today!

I was at Carkeek Park yesterday (3-24-10) and saw at least 1 gray whale, possibly 2! So close, about 50-70 feet away from the shore! It was amazing, I think maybe it was a baby and it’s mother. They spouted 10-12 times and one flipped over and we saw both fins. Totally amazing!
