All four Seattle Lutheran High School basketball teams played host to their rival Sea-Tac League opponents, the Evergreen Lutheran Eagles, on Saturday. Highlights, including video, ahead:
Early in the evening, the Lady Saints played a very tough physical game that boiled down to a battle under the basket. Despite playing Evergreen close for most of two quarters, the Lady Saints lost to the Eagles 55-23.
Overall, the Lady Saints shut down the Eagles’ attempt at relying on the fast break. But the tight defense and multiple Eagle turnovers recovered by the Saints were not enough to overcome two Eagles scoring runs. The first came at the start of the game for 10 points, and in the third quarter, Evergreen was highly efficient shooting from the floor. It was a very physical, very intense game:
Scoring for the Lady Saints were Ali Bigardo, Sarah Crunican, Elyssa Watford, Beret Dunn.
The nightcap saw the Saints’ boys’ varsity team defeat the Eagles 68-58. Despite two major scoring runs the Saints never managed to put Evergreen away for good at any point in the game. The Eagles fought back from a 14-point run at the very start of the game and a veritable clinic in the third quarter that saw the Saints go out to as much as a 20-point lead just after halftime. Much like the girls’ game, this matchup was very physical and relied on what happened under the boards.
High scorers on the night were Fred Lisko with 21 points and Thomas Overshine with 19.
JUNIOR VARSITY: (corrected from original story) On Saturday afternoon the Saints’ junior varsity teams both won – the girls beat Evergreen, 42-23 while the boys won, 51-22.
NEXT GAMES: The JV boys and varsity girls and boys play at Chief Leschi next Tuesday, starting at 3:30. (Here’s the full schedule.)
