High school football postseason: What’s next for West Seattle HS

Since West Seattle High School finished the season in a three-way tie for division lead with Rainier Beach and Nathan Hale, the three teams had to play tiebreaking minigames tonight at Memorial Stadium. Those games are now over. WSHS beat RB in the first one, lost to Hale in the second one, and the end result is, its next game is Friday, 5 pm, vs. Seattle Prep at Memorial Stadium. We tweeted the WSHS games at @wsblive (you can see highlights there till we add them here); there’s also a quick roundup at seattletimes.com (WSB partner). ADDED EARLY TUESDAY: WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand‘s notes from covering the tiebreaker matches:

West Seattle ended Monday night as the second seed in the Metro League’s Sound Division and moves on to play Seattle Prep. The Wildcats ended the regular season in a three-way tie with Rainier Beach and Nathan Hale. That led to a series of mini-games played at Memorial Stadium that would determine the seeding of the three teams as they enter the Metro League championship playoffs starting this weekend.

Playing a game that consisted of two eight-minute halves, West Seattle beat Rainier Beach 13-0. Their first score came with only seconds to go in the first half when quarterback Ellison Tran completed a 52 yard pass play to Markeem Adams. West Seattle received the kick for the second eight-minute half and controlled the ball for about five minutes. The drive ended with a nine-yard pass from Tran to Isaiah Jenkins for the score.

Per the rules of the Metro League’s charter, that advanced West Seattle into yet another mini-game with Nathan Hale. The lone score in that game came when Hale’s defensive back Marco Henry intercepted an Ellison Tran pass and ran it back for a touchdown.

While there was visible disappointment among the Wildcat players, their coach Davis Lura left the field confident that they would have prevailed over Hale had there just been more time.

ADDED 10:20 AM TUESDAY: From Mike Kreiger on the WSHS coaching staff, regarding what happens AFTER Friday night’s game: “If West Seattle wins, we get the #3 seed and a home game the next week against the #3 team from the Olympia area next Friday or Saturday. If West Seattle loses, we get the #4 seed and a road game up at the #1 team from the NW division next week (Friday or Sat).”

I think it was un-fair and dangerous that right after West Seattle played Rainier Beach, that they had to turn around and play against Nathan Hale 15 minutes later. Nathan Hale came down to the field with fresh bodies and West Seattle has already played two 8 minute halves. Whomever came up with this mini-playoff should have thought about the danger and unfairness of this decision. Especially being that so many football injuries have been in the news lately.

Sorry, comment time is over.
