Election 2009: Another Mike McGinn town hall in West Seattle

checkbox.jpgOne week ago, mayoral candidate Mike McGinn came to High Point Library for a “town hall” meeting (WSB coverage here). He’s just announced another West Seattle meeting (along with 5 others around the city): 3 pm Sunday (Oct. 4), Hiawatha Community Center. Opponent Joe Mallahan has not had similar meetings, so far. Meantime, both mayoral candidates are expected at the Delridge/Southwest District Councils-presented West Seattle Candidates’ Forum on Oct. 15 (7 pm, Youngstown Arts Center).

He can come here all he wants in his attempts to convince us that removing the viaduct won’t adversely affect traffic, the quality of life or property values in W Seattle. There’s no way I’m voting for Mike McGridlock.

It will be interesting to hear what he proposes to do with the 70,000+ cars that use the Viaduct every day for the 5 or 6 years it would take to tear it down and build a whole new surface street grid. I can just hear how “smart alternate solutions” such as more water taxis and staggered work hours will work. No they won’t. The city will be gridlocked – and West Seattle stranded (with plummeting property values) – for many years if he gets his way. It’s a physical reality. Of course it won’t affect him; he can still bike from his house in N. Seattle.

There is a reason that the Fire Fighters, Police and Amalgamated Transit Union support Mallahan. They know that McGinn’s plan to tear down the viaduct and have us use surface streets would be a disaster.

Seattle is not as bad off as much of the country, however our economy is still fragile. The last thing we need is an anti-business, environmental zealot who doesn’t have a clue as our next Mayor. His viaduct “solution” would be particularly disasterous to West Seattle and our property values.

Sorry, comment time is over.
