Update: Police investigating body found on Harbor Ave shore

ORIGINAL 11:42 AM REPORT: If you’ve noticed police and yellow tape in the 1900 block of Harbor SW (map), here’s what’s happening: A body was found in the water. We just talked with Officer Mark Jamieson in the Seattle Police media unit and that’s all they can tell us right now – firefighters briefly answered a medic-response call to the area just before 11 am but it was clear they weren’t needed as the person (no description) was “DOA,” Jamieson says, adding that police are “actively investigating.” 12:42 PM UPDATE: To give you an idea of where this is, we added the photo above – it’s the industrial area between Salty’s and Jack Block Park. 1:16 PM UPDATE: Just checked with Officer Renee Witt at SPD, who tells us there was ID on the body indicating it’s that of a 38-year-old Seattle man. Too soon to tell how he died – that information will come from the County Medical Examiner. Officer Witt says the man’s body actually was found half in the water, half out, under a pier in the area, about 100 yards south of Salty’s. The first report came from a cell phone, apparently from someone walking in the area, she says. TUESDAY AFTERNOON UPDATE: The daily update from the ME’s office confirms this was a case of suicide, cause of death listed as drowning. WSB policy is to not publish names (although in some of our past reports, family/friends have chose to disclose ID in comments) but public records for the name on the ME list suggests he lived in West Seattle.

and there was a person missing from a ferry last week. Wonder if they’re connected?

We’ll be checking with SPD throughout the day (and the medical examiner too, since they’re the ones who will autopsy and identify the person) for additional info – TR

I passed the area just at the time that more response personnel were arriving.
I wondered what was going on…if it that woman from the ferry at least there would be some closure for the family.

Just updated the story with new info from police. Not a woman … a man .. with ID on him belonging to a 38-year-old Seattle resident … too soon to tell how he died.

I know who this is. We’ve been worried for a couple of weeks about him as he went missing after leaving an ominous note. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. A large hole will be left in our lives. Our hearts go out to his family.

We worked together and we all knew he would turn up. Just talked about it this morning, probably as his body was appearing. How terribly sad. He suffered though, and now his struggle is over.

To the two previous commenters: I am sorry to hear your reports that this is believed to be a case of suicide. We have written here before that it is a tragic epidemic that needs to be discussed more so that solutions can be found – before more lives are lost. It takes more lives in King County every year than homicide, yet the latter gets all the headlines because of a mistaken belief that discussing suicide somehow triggers more (not true, according to national experts, as long as it is not romanticized). We will be checking with the medical examiner tomorrow to seek confirmation, but in the meantime, for anyone who needs it, the Crisis Line, 24 hours: 206.461.3222.

Bree & E. Saunders please send my wishes to the family. This can not be an easy time for them. They will be in my thoughts.

I agree with WSB that suicide needs to be reported and discussed. I lost my father 5 years ago and got some great support from SOS, Survivors Of Suicide support group that meets every week.
Here is a link to find groups in many areas:

If that link doesn’t work, go to http://www.asfp.org and look under Surviving Suicide Loss.

Whenever I hear of someone taking their own life, I feel hurt inside and say a little prayer for them as I will now.

He was a wonderful man who will always be in our hearts. I love him and miss him very much. His sense of humor, his friendship and his love.
Thank you all. He is in a better place now.
