Duwamish Longhouse grand opening set for Saturday

This first came up in the WSB Forums today, and we just got it confirmed by James Rasmussen, the Duwamish Tribe‘s Longhouse and Cultural Center director, so we could post official word – the longhouse’s grand opening (on the eastern edge of West Seattle) is finally happening this Saturday (Jan. 3), 10 am. (added Tuesday night) Location: 4700 block of West Marginal Way; here’s a map. Rasmussen says the event will last about 2 hours, starting with a 10 am ribbon-cutting, including speeches from various dignitaries and “a thank you from our chair Cecile Hansen.”

Awesome!! Can’t wait and definitely I’ll be there. Folks can walk down from the top of Pigeon Point – be a fun way to re-connect with the peninsula, the river and the lore of the estuary and sound. Wow – I really am psyched. This has been a long time in coming.

Very cool. If this is the same James that ran Bud’s Jazz Records, he’s a great guy and he’s probably been a big part of getting this project done.

I can’t find information on this particular event. I searched the web too. Am I overlooking info posted on their website? Is this event open to the public and where is the longhouse located? Is there a charge or suggested donation? Thanks!

No, it’s not on their website. I’d been trying for a long time to get a hold of somebody regarding the new date (it originally was scheduled in November) – then today in the WSB Forums, someone mentioned seeing a brief mention of the event at the bottom of this article:

I found the e-mail address for James Rasmussen on the Duwamish website, sent him a note inquiring, he said, sorry, you must not have been on our media release list, yes, it’s this Saturday. I’ll add the map to this blurb – inexcusable but I posted it in a rush – TR

Sorry, comment time is over.
