“Save West Seattle Stadium” website launched

Next step in the plan to seek private operators for West Seattle Stadium is a Parks Board vote Nov. 13 on the “request for proposals” (as we reported last week), but in the meantime, there’s a new website set up by people concerned about its future. We got word today of savewestseattlestadium.blogspot.com; its author is requesting your comments and other feedback, and is planning to add additional info to the site in days to come.

I’m having a hard time figuring out what the blogger’s central grievance is.

What is the stadium being saved from?

Saving the historic north grandstand is essential. Does the city’s proposal destroy it? I can’t tell.

Field turf would, in my opinion, be better than grass, because we have so few fields and so many people wanting to use them. The blogger seems to not want the field turf, but I don’t understand why.

ADA compliance would be good, not bad. People with disabilities should have seating, concessions and restroom access so that they can enjoy events at the stadium just like everyone else.

The most important thing that needs to be saved – and this is the real issue, I think – is public access. I am particularly cancerned about priority scheduling for West Seattle High School on this, its historic home field. This is a public facility and the public high school ought to darned well be able to play its home games there and not get squeezed out by well-heeled private schools.
