Update: Eastbound Spokane Street now officially closed at 1st Ave. S.

spokanesigns.jpg

As the photo shows (looking north from 1st Ave. So – the west side of the closure is where you see all the SDOT workers), we saw the final barricades and signs go up at quarter till 11. This means the “Costco detour” is now in effect, and will be for at least two years, as the three-year project to widen the Spokane Street Viaduct (the West Seattle Bridge between Highway 99 and I-5) begins. Detour map and much more info on the city website here.

I may just be dense…what exactly does this mean. I looked at the detour map on the city web site and it seems a little unclear. is the first ave exit closed?

My understanding is that the 1st ave exit is open but drivers have to make a left at 1st and head to Lander if they want to go to 4th.

When you get off at 1st Avenue So, from the eastbound bridge, you have to turn left onto 1st. You will be detoured to Lander, where you can go up to 4th (or beyond) and then turn right (south) to go toward Costco (or wherever).

Does anyone know if they are changing the timing of the lights to accomodate the increase of traffic needing to turn left onto 1st S. and then going up 1st S. to Lander?

I hope the lights will be reset b/c 1st Avenue South gets way too much time to get through their light. Has anyone noticed that timing of lights around town seems to have changed in the past week or two? Fauntleroy and Alaska is terrible…the light is so short for northbound Fauntleroy traffic and then the signal changes for westbound Alaska traffic even if no cars are there, which it never did in the past. SDOT screws things up again. Now if only they’d make lights along 35th shorter, I’d be happy (only b/c I’m always trying to cross 35th, not drive on it).
