Goats: Not just for clearing brush

Every weekend, when we publish the “fresh sheet” for the West Seattle Farmers’ Market, we note in passing that its more unconventional offerings include goat meat. Anybody buying it, you wonder? Unequivocally, yes – here’s here’s an anecdote from the relatively new blog for Earth Ministry, posted by its West Seattle-based executive director.

I have tried the riblets and the loin chops and I recommend them highly. The flavor is reminiscent of lamb with something extra. A bit pricey but worth it.

    Disgusting, ethically and aesthetically.

Many, many cultures consider goat meat as a main source of protein. What’s “disgusting” to one is normal to another. I don’t do goat, but my partner grew up on it, as it was the food they were able to raise. It’s very common as a food source in many many countries around the world.

I grew up on goats’ milk and with goats as pets. A few weeks ago we tried some goat meat up at the Maharaja- I was less than impressed with the texture- but I figured I had to try it to go along with the other exotic meats I have tried: bear, reindeer, gator, grasshopper…. ;)

My husband is a big fan of goat curry. Personally, I don’t care for all the little bones. But if he doesn’t hassle me about eating beef (he’s Hindu) then I guess I can leave him alone about the bony goat meat.

Not disgusting at all. I grew up (east coast) eating squirrel that my Granddad hunted and Grandmom prepared. My wife can’t believe it, but to be honest its just food. Anything can be good. Some places even consider guinea pig a delicacy. Who am I to judge? When in Rome..

Before moving to the Northwest, barbecued goat was a traditional meal for the 4th of July!

I don’t eat meat, but regardless…it seemed a little messed up to see the baby goat at that booth, while the owner sold the “dispatched” remains of it’s elders. I guess it’s better that people know what they’re eating, and where it comes from.

Perfectly juxtaposed was the young man selling vegan baked goods at the booth next door.

Sorry, comment time is over.
