Coyote sighting & TV-crew sighting

smallercoyote.jpgIf you’re wondering what the TV live truck is doing at Lincoln Park, channel 4 is following up on our report Monday about the “Coyote Warning” flyers papered throughout the hillside neighborhood over the central part of the park. Haven’t seen their story yet but the reporter told us they found the family who says a coyote snatched their dog. Meantime, we got a coyote-sighting report this morning from Dean, who wrote: “I live on the hill above La Rustica along the Me-Kwa-Mooks greenbelt and about 1 am today i was awakened by a howling coyote nearby. Very cool!” (Reminder, info you should know about coexisting with coyotes is in this WSB report about the recent citywide info meeting.)

I was walking my dog on Mon. the 25th between SW 39th and 107th SW (Arbor Heights) and a coyote ran up from behind us, I turned startled but he kept going never slowed down, thank goodness.

I don’t know, beachdrivegirl, reading this blog lately I think you’ve got a lot more to fear from middle schoolers than you do from coyotes… ;)

Wednesday morning at about 4 am, I awoke to hear a coyote conversation, yipping and howling, between 2 or three coyotes. It was absolutely beautiful. Oh, and I live about a half a block from the SW 97th Ave entrance to the park.

Jan, coyotes, or tv news crews? :p

    .

And, WSB, as much as I appreciate what you do for the community, I think it’s a bit irresponsible to report on the tv news crews out running around..

    .

I fear we may witness a hysteria, and that people are going to be afraid to walk down the street, for fear that one or more tv news crew members might sneak out from behind a bush, throw a parka around an unsuspecting citizen, and drag them into a remote van, peeling out to take the victim to an unknown destination and fate.

And Mike, where were you the other night when we reported an actual Jim Forman sighting? We noted that just for you (Patrick went out to the scene of the pit-bull incident in Westwood and as the TV crews started rolling in from the other side of the bay, he was the first one to arrive).

  • miws February 29, 2008 (6:11 am)

Heh, I saw that one, but neglected to comment.

    .

I somehow couldn’t get this picture out of my mind of Parka Boy/Danger Jim hanging by one hand from the runner of the chopper giving his report! :D

    /fixed that for ya, E

Hey Jen, how many people in the US have been killed by Coyotes in the last few years?? How about seriously wounded??

  • JenV February 29, 2008 (10:44 am)

cool your jets, Jumbo…I am not going to argue pitbulls with you. I happen to be a fan of pits and belive that the owners are to blame for pits’ bad behavior. as I stated in the forum: nature and nurture both play a part in how nasty and mean animals – and humans- turn out. Cheers and happy friday!

Varmint Al tracks coyote attacks at
    http://www.varmintal.com/attac.htm
One of them in 2006 was near Bellevue.
    .
In April 2006, a coyote nipped a 4 year old and an 18-month old on a playground in Eastgate. “The boys were treated for minor puncture wounds and scratches,” and the next morning a Fish and Game officer shot a coyote in the same area after it walked up to a hiker on a trail, who threw a piece of wood at it. Because of this unusual behavior, it might well have been the same animal.

The King 5 story says about 20 coyotes live in the woods around Eastgate and seldom approach people.

I saw this on the news last night, and they said there’s only one coyote. This is completely wrong -Fauntleroy Park is literally my backyard, and late at night I always see PACKS of them. The other night I saw a medium sized black one in my back yard

Hey coyotes and pit bulls. Howzabout teaming up and eating the careless, irresponsible owners of any breed of dog that runs loose and attacks innocent people and other dogs and pets?

    .

Now, the resposible dog owners are okay, so don’t eat them. I hear the irresponsible owners that blatantly and intentionally turn their dogs aggresive are the tastiest. Ridding the world of those bad ones would leave only loving, responsible owners to give the dogs the loving care that every pet deserves.

    .

Now remember, SHARE!! No fighting over who gets a drumstick!

    Re: Drumsticks for coyotes
There’s a crazy woman in Wyoming who keeps a coyote as a pet and treats it like a dog or cat. She feeds it unwanted elk parts, from guides skinning the game shot by dude hunters. They saw off the lower legs of the elk at the knee and give them to her to feed her pet. There’s a charming photo of it carrying off a raw elk leg in its jaws.
    .
But there may be clouds on the horizon in this idyllic scene. The ranchers and farmers are armed and vigilant, and show no sympathy for it or its alleged diet of tasty elk legs.

We have seen a coyote in our back yard, fauntleroy area, several times this morning. Fun to see, but too fast to get a photo of.

Definitely a concern for our indoor/outdoor cats.

Sorry, comment time is over.
