Another West Seattle retailer moving

Marilyn Murphy from Murphy’s Furniture Studio on Avalon (just up the hill from Java Bean, Luna Park Cafe, Avalon Glass Works) confirms her store will be moving in the next few months. She says she’d been thinking about it for a while, and a recent rent increase helped “influence her decision” as well. As is the case with Basic Green Box‘s move, which we reported here Monday, Murphy’s hasn’t settled on a new location yet but will update us when they do. Marilyn adds she’s preparing for the move already: “I am starting to mark down a lot of merchandise and will be having a fabric sale next month.” (Thanks to Beth for e-mailing the tip on this.)

I assume/hope the folks who are moving will remain in WS (maybe as anchors in some of the first floor “condo” developments which claim to be targeted for retail. Don’t know what their rents will be, but they should be dropping. Murphy’s and Basic Green Box are part of our unique culture and, much as I want a TJs, I hope we can retain the quirky too.

And I know WSB will let us know the minute anyone hints at where these folks are going to be.

I do hope Murphy’s stays in WS. They did an outstanding job at repairing a brand new chair we purchased from a lousy Junction based furniture which I will never step foot in again.

What’s up with greedy landlords? It’s a shame that Murphy’s is being priced right out of their building. Hope they find a great new home in WS.

Even if they leave the area, I will follow them! Good people, products and attitude!

Sorry, comment time is over.
