Help make The Junction a prettier place

The West Seattle Junction Association Beautification Committee is soliciting bids for some landscaping work to spruce up various spots in the heart of West Seattle, including the well-known “flagpole corner.” Click ahead to read the request for bids — interesting reading even if you don’t expect to be bidding — and to see a sketch of the areas involved:

The West Seattle Junction Association (WSJA) is seeking bids for landscaping a number of small, common areas which border the free parking lots in the West Seattle Junction. Please submit site plans with bid for the areas detailed in the map (displayed below). Site plan and bid should be submitted to the WSJA office located at 4210 SW Oregon Street, Suite A, Seattle, WA 98116, no later than October 31st, 2007.

The winning plan/bid will address the following issues and goals: Incorporate existing trees and other desirable plantings into a more cohesive and visually appealing whole. Plans should address the need for outdoor, public seating in the Junction and should use only hardy, low maintenance and drought tolerant plantings.

Specific concerns per area:

Area 1) Flagpole corner – this is the gateway to the Junction and bidders are encouraged to recreate the site in terms of providing visual “punch” and a sense of welcoming visitors to the Junction.

Areas 2, 3 and 4) Juniper (and other plant) borders along free parking at 44th Ave – while incorporating some of the existing landscape, bidders are asked to create a more park-like setting and public space where people can sit or picnic.

Area 5) Small triangular planter behind Northwest Art and Frame – Upgrade plantings.

Area 6) Fenced border and landscaping that exist along 42nd street free parking lot – This site needs to be revamped while maintaining a barrier/shield from headlights shining into the homes on the east side of the street. Remove fence? Incorporate what % of the current plantings? Re-do signage for free parking? (You tell us!)

Please do not hesitate to call Susan Melrose for additional information. She may be reached via e-mail wsja@wsjunction.com, or by phone, 206-935-0904.

Thank you! The WSJA Beautification Committee

It will be nice to see these areas landscaped. Just curious…what are the plans for ongoing maintenance once this is completed? Please not another area that is allowed to get overgrown and weedy (like the triangle near Hancock’s/Shucks bldg!

Sorry, comment time is over.
