Big beefy buy

meatdelivery.jpg

4 weeks after we told you about WSB reader Meghen‘s invitation to others to join the West Seattle Meateaters meat-buying club she was forming to get sustainably raised meat through Thundering Hooves – they just got their first delivery over the weekend. Meghen sent us the photo above, and told WSB that Thundering Hooves declared the WS delivery their biggest first-time order ever. They’ve got unlimited room for more people to join before the next delivery December 1st; you can sign up any time up till the Monday before the delivery (in this case, that would be November 26th) by going to the Thundering Hooves site and looking for West Seattle Meateaters. (Or e-mail Meghen directly with questions by clicking here.)

I’m finding the Thundering Hooves site a bit confusing. Does anyone know if the meat is fully grass fed, or just pasture finished? This makes a big difference to me.

Oh, it’s grass-fed beef, at least…obviously, their pork isn’t grass-fed because pigs need other goodness, but I get my pork locally anyways…it’s the beef that counts if you ask me. See http://www.thunderinghooves.net/meats/products.htm#1

I would tell you it’s good meat. I go in with a buying club where I live (remember, i only work and drink coffee in WS) and i have been thoroughly impressed with their meat. I can’t say enough good about the product and the fact that their beefalo is rich beyond belief.

Sooo, if they’re selling pieces of meat, then “Thundering Hooves” is a bit of a misnomer isn’t it? Or are they just being ironic?

Those that believe that by eating a purely vegetarian diet they are saving animal’s lives are simply naive. As a farmer’s daughter I can tell you that an abundance of animal life is extinquished by the plow and the harvester when working on the fields of veggies and grains that you so guiltlessly consume. We are a product of a long complex line of evolution that gave us both sharp canine teeth for tearing into animal flesh and flat molars for grinding up grains and vegetable matter…we are omnivores. But hey you are free to choose to not eat meat just don’t think that your diet does not cost some animal its life.

I feel good about eating meat that I know is raised by caring individuals who give it the best life possible before helping it cross into death and packaging. Plus it is just so damn yummy.

Sorry, comment time is over.
