Free organic produce – with just one catch

That’s Longfellow Creek Farm — a quarter-acre at 2311 SW Myrtle (just off Delridge; map) where Growing Washington is inviting you to a “community-garden restoration work party” noon-4 pm April 19. Help is needed raking leaves, clipping brambles, spreading mulch, weed-whacking, and painting. The goal is to restore the site into a “functioning, food-producing garden,” and volunteers will be first in line for free organic produce — once it’s grown. They’d like you to let them know you’ll be there; register during the next week by using the contact info here.

Wow! I remember Spring 1998 when several friends and I first tilled that land, which belonged to Laura Love at the time. We poured a lot of love (and chicken manure) into the soil, had a CSA the first year (with local PCC and Seattle Tilth founding member Elaine Stannard as one of our subscribers!) and sold at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market for the next several years. We had the biggest and best garlic at the market! That is a beautiful little space, and I am thrilled that people are continuing to grow organic produce on it.

That is great history! I’m so excited that you were involved with this Garden in the past. I would love for you to go to our website and post your recollections. I think that will really bring this project full circle.
